Conflict and consensus

Some political cultures are conflictual (more prone to conflict)

Others, consensual (characterized by high levels of consensus in society about basic political values and principles)

Existence of consensus does not mean absence of conflict: one can have consensus (rules) as to how to wage and manage conflicts

16.Ideologies.

Different ideologies assign different amounts of power to those who control the state and

give average citizens different amounts of power via the ability to participate in the political process.

Def. ideology: comprehensive worldview from which goals and actions are derived. Distinguish political ideologies, religious ideologies, economic ideologies, etc.

Every regime has some ideology that attempts to justify its existence.

All regimes have formal institutions that reflect ideological claims.
