Lewes, one of England’s best kept secrets

When William the Conqueror invaded in 1066, Lewes was one of the first places to fall, and today the castle is a reminder of that Norman Conquest. The octagonal towers give commanding views to the sea, while the Barbican Gateway, from the 14th century, is one of the finest surviving.

Lewes’ most famous citizen was Thomas Paine who lived in The Bull Inn on the High Street. Author of the ‘Rights of Man’, he was invited to the then colony of America in 1774 by Benjamin Franklin. Thomas Paine played an important role in the construction of the American Constitution.

Brighton, regency splendour by the sea

Surrounded by the Sussex hills, Brighton has long been one of England’s most fashionable seaside resorts. Brington’s status was secured when the Prince regent completed the Royal Pavilion. It has been recently restored and now houses many pieces of furniture direct from Buckingham Palace. The narrow twisting passages know locally as “The Lane” were originally the fishing village of Brighthemstone, but today are a colourful mixture of shops, restaurants and pubs. The unique Palace Pier with its fun-fairs, arcades and fortune-tellers, means Brighton has something for everyone.
