Laissez-Faire Leadership Style

This French phrase means «leave it be» and is used to describe a leader who leaves his colleagues to get on with their work. This leadership style can be effective if the leader monitors what is being achieved and communicates with his or her team regularly. Most often, laissez-faire leadership works for teams in which the individuals are very experienced and skilled self-starters.

A laissez-faire leadership style is also known as the «hands-off» style. It is one in which a manager provides little or no direction and gives employees as much freedom as possible. All authority or power is given to the employees and they must determine goals, make decisions and resolve problems on their own.

This is an effective style to use when:

· Employees have pride in their work and they are able to do it successfully on their own.

· Outside experts, staff specialists or consultants are being used.

This style should not be used when:

ü It makes employees feel insecure at the unavailability of a manager.

ü The manager cannot provide regular feedback to let employees know how well they are doing.

ü Managers are unable to thank employees for their good work.

ü A manager doesn’t understand his responsibilities and is hoping the employees can cover for him.

A laissez-faire or a free-rein leader does not lead, but leaves the staff entirely to itself. Such a leader allows maximum freedom to his subordinates; they are given “a free hand” in deciding their own policies and methods.

Different situations call for different leadership styles. Business can be done successfully only in case a leadership style has been chosen correctly. As for a laissez-faire leadership style it can be effective only in a highly motivated team.
