Exercise 1. Read and memorize the following words:

Exercise 2. Read the text and be ready to answer the questions:
When we have a headache, a stomach-ache, a sore throat, a cold,or a pain in some other part of the body, we call the doctor. He takes our temperature and feels our pulse. He examines our heart, our lungs, our stomach or pressure, the part of the body which hurts us, and tells us what the matter is with us. He says: "You have a slight temperature", "You have the flu", or "You have caught a cold", or "You have heart disease".
The doctor gives us a prescri ption and says: "I shall prescribe some medicine. You must take the prescri ption to the chemist and he will make up the medicine for you. Take the medicine twice a day before meals".
If we follow the doctor's instructions, we get better; if we disobey the doctor we may get worse, and even die. We must follow the doctor's instructions, if we want to get better. If we have a temperature, we must stay in bed and take the medicine he prescribes. If we cannot get better at home we must go to hospital.
If we need an operation, for example, if we have appendicitis, a surgeon performs the operation on us. If we are too ill we go to hospital in the ambulance. After our illness we can go to a sanatorium until we are strong again.
When we have toothache, we go to the dentist's. The dentist examines our teeth and asks: "Which tooth hurts you?" He says: "That tooth has a cavity. I must stop it, I must put in a filling". If the tooth is too bad, the dentist extracts it.

Exercise 4. Fill in the blanks with the necessary words in brackets:

Exercise 5. Read the dialogue in roles and translate it.

| Doctor: | Let me examine you, but first take your temperature. The temperature is too high. Will you open your mouth and say “A-a”. |

| Doctor: | The throat is slightly inflamed. Will you take your blouse off, I want to examine you. Breathe in, now breathe out. Cough. Enough. How many days have you been coughing? |
| Ann: | The second day. |
| Doctor: | You have a typical cold. You should stay in bed some days and take medicine. Here is a prescription. |
| Ann: | How many times a day should I take the medicine? |
| Doctor: | Three times a day after meals. Drink hot tea with milk. |
| Ann: | What do you think, how much time have I to stay in bed? |
| Doctor: | Three or four days. I am sure that by the end of the week you will have recovered.(will have felt better). |

Exercise 6. Translate the dialogue into English:
Ганна: Доброго ранку, лікарю!
Лікар: Доброго ранку. Ваше прізвище?
Ганна: Стельмах.
Лікар: Ось ваша картка. Що з вами?
Ганна: Мене морозить і, гадаю, в мене температура. Я погано спала цю ніч, але вранці поїхала до Коледжу. Після двох занять я змушена була піти – я почувала себе дуже погано.
Лікар: Давайте я огляну Вас, але спочатку зміряйте температуру.(Подивившись на термометр)Температура зависока. Відкрийте рот и скажіть «А-а».
Ганна: А-а-а.
Лікар: Гортань трохи запалена. Зніміть кофтину, я хочу Вас послухати. Вдихніть, тепер видихніть. Покашляйте. Достатньо. Скільки днів ви кашляєте?
Ганна: Другий день.
Лікар: У вас типова (typical) простуда. Треба полежати кілька днів у ліжку та попити ліки. Ось рецепт.
Ганна: Скільки разів на день приймати ліки?
Лікар: Три рази на день після їди. Попийте гарячий чай з молоком.
Ганна: Як ви гадаєте, скільки часу мені доведеться пролежать в ліжку?
Лікар: Днів три-чотири. Я певний, що до кінця тижня Ви почуватимете себе добре.
Ганна: дякую, лікарю.
Лікар: До побачення.
