  Dear Sirs We have received your letter of 4 April complaining of our poor packing.

Steps: - say that you are surprised about the customer's complaint;

- (because) your customers have always found the packing of your goods fully satisfactory;

- say that you can improve your packing, but in that case you will have to increase the prices.

Exercise 1. Write a reply to the following letter admitting your fault.

  Dear Sirs We have received your letter of 5 July and your Invoice No.157 for which we thank you. To our surprise we find that in the above Invoice you have charged higher prices than you listed in your offer of 2 March this year. We should be obliged if you would check your records and send us an amended Invoice. Yours faithfully

Exercise 2. You have just received the following telex:

  FURTHER TO OUR CLAIM OF 30 MAY CONCERNING POOR QUALITY OF LACQUER. WE ARE SENDING BY SEPARATE MAIL SAMPLES OF LACQUER WHICH PROVED DEFECTIVE WHEN APPLIED TO WOOD. PLEASE ADVISE THE RESULTS OF ANALYSIS. WE EXPECT REPLACEMENT END THIS MONTH. REGARDS

What do you think was written in the letter of the 30th of May? Write your version of that letter. What are possible answers to this claim? Write different replies (admitting your fault or rejecting the claim).
