Sport in Great Britain and Russia.

 

Good afternoon, dear students! Today we will talk about sports in Russia and the Great Britain.

Добрый день, дорогие студенты! Сегодня мы с вами поговорим о спорте в России и Великобритании.

 

Task 1. Прочитайте правила употребления глаголов  play, do, go (УСТНО).

Когда Британцы рассказывают о своих занятиях спортом, они обычно говорят – «do sport»:

We usually do sport twice a week. – Мы обычно занимаемся спортом два раза в неделю.

Американцы в этой ситуации могут сказать «practice sport», если речь идет о тренировке. Например:

Our team is practicing for the international competition. – Наша команда тренируется перед международными соревнованиями.

Но есть еще один вариант рассказать о своих спортивных увлечениях — «play sport», если речь идет об командных видах спорта.

Иногда в разговоре можно услышать оба глагола – «do» и «play»:

“What sport do you do?”

“I play badminton.”

Но о любви к спорту все говорят одинаково – I love sport.

 

Итак, чем же отличаются глаголы «do» и «play»?

DO – как правило, употребляется с названиями видов спорта, предполагающих индивидуальное участие и исключающих игры с мячом.

Do ballet – заниматься балетом

Do yoga – заниматься йогой

Do aerobics – заниматься аэробикой

Do pilates – заниматься пилатесом.

PLAY – используется, когда речь идет об играх, в которых присутствует элемент состязания, о командных видах спорта, а также о тех видах спорта, которые предполагают наличие мяча или аналогичных предметов, таких как шайба (puck), диск (disk), волан (shuttlecock) и др.

Play badminton – играть в бадминтон

Play poker – играть в покер

Play squash – играть в сквош

Play chess – играть в шахматы

 

Но есть еще один глагол – «go».

GO – употребляется с названиями видов деятельности и видов спорта, заканчивающихся на «- ing». Глагол «go» указывает на то, что занимающийся данными видами спорта или деятельностью должен перемещаться в пространстве.

Например:

Go skating – кататься на коньках, пойти кататься на коньках

Go swimming – заниматься плаванием, пойти поплавать

Go dancing – заниматься танцами, пойти на танцы.

 

Исключения из правила употреблении глаголов «go», «do» и «play».

•     Глагол «do», а не «go» употребляется со следующими существительными, заканчивающимися на «-ing» — «bodybuilding», «boxing», «weightlifting» (тяжелая атлетика). Объясняется это тем, что, занимаясь бодибилдингом, тяжелой атлетикой и боксом, индивид не совершает значительных перемещений в пространстве.

•     Существительное «golf» нормативно употребляется с глаголом «play», если речь идет о соревнованиях по гольфу. Но если игра в гольф рассматривается как вид отдыха, то следует говорить «go golfing».

Sport in Russia

Sport in Russia has always been popular. So which sports are better developed in Russia? Russia, as a rule, has good results in classical kinds of sport. This is in some ways connected with the period of Soviet Union when big attention was paid to physical education of the youth. But the lessons of Soviet school didn’t go without any influence. Quite often foreign sportsmen, lead by Russian trainers, appear on world level competitions. Also often you can see Russian sportsmen fighting of medals for other countries. There are many jokes about it. For example when you watch international competitions you hear that the trainers and the sportsmen easily understand each other because they all speak Russian.

Actually, a healthy way of life is again coming into fashion in Russia today. That is why people have started to take an interest in sport. 

Tennis has a large popularity. Some people connect that with the fact that this sport was a hobby of Russian ex-president Boris Yeltsin. Today Russian tennis players are famous all over the world. Sharapova, Kurnikova, Kafelnikov, Miskina are only the best known Russian tennis players.

Ice-hockey is another one successful sport in the country. The Russian team takes worthy places in competitions.. In USSR there was a period when hockey team won 9 world championships in a row. Another sport which is widespread in the country is football. There are many amateurs of this game in Russia.

And of course the favorite sport of many women is figure skating. This is a very beautiful show. And here Russia is still the leader. Besides, figure skating is quickly getting popularity in the country. New ice rinks are opened, parents take their children to sport schools. Actually many kinds of sport are popular in Russia. Both on a professional level and on an amateur one. Ski sport and volleyball are good examples here.

We should say some words about Russian supporters. Here we can call it a kind of sport too. The sense of empathy is inherent to Russians. The team spirit lives in them. Russians prepare for going and supporting their favorite team in advance. Russians are ready to overcome big distance to see the performance of their favourite sportsmen.
