Globalization

Globalization is the process of global economic, political, cultural and religious integration and unification.

Over many centuries, human societies across the globe have established progressively closer contacts. Recently, the pace of global integration has dramatically increased. Globalization affects not only the economy but also the politics, the culture and the law. Unprecedented changes in communications, transportation, and computer technology have given the process new impetus and made the world more interdependent than ever. Multinational corporations manufacture products in many countries and sell to consumers around the world. Money, technology and raw materials move ever more swiftly across national borders. As a result, laws, economies, and social movements are forming at the international level. Globalization lets countries move closer to each other. People, companies and organizations in different countries can live and work together. We can exchange goods, money and ideas faster and cheaper than ever before. Modern communication and technology, like the Internet, cell phones or satellite TV help us in our daily lives.

There are lots of benefits of globalization. First of all, the intensification of international competition. Competition and market expansion lead to the deepening of specialization and the international division of labour. Secondly, economy of scale can potentially lead to cost savings and lower prices, and hence sustainable economic growth. And finally, an increase productivity in the rationalization of production at the global level and distribution of advanced technology and competitive pressures for continuous innovation on a global scale.

However, globalization is a complicated multy-faceted process,so it has its own drawbacks. Globalization causes unemployment in industrialized countries because firms move their factories to places where they can get cheaper workers. It can also result in different environmental problems. A company may want to build factories in other countries because environmental laws are not as strict as they are at home. Some of the poorest countries in the world, especially in Africa, may get even poorer. Human, animal and plant diseases can spread more quickly through globalization. Nevertheless, personally I think that the most serious downside of the globalization is the destruction of the identity of countries, nations, cultures and customs.
