Neutral – Формирует основную массу лексики. Слова, входящие в нейтральный пласт используются во всех функциональных стилях. В любой деятельности человека.
Literary – ораторская, письменная речь (to implement \to carry out [разг.]), (to remain \to stay [нейтр.]). Часто попадают слова французского происхождения, заимствования. (assassinate)
The literary vocabulary consists of the following subgroups:
1) common literary,
2) terms and learned word,
3) poetical words (steed-horse, woe-sorrow),
4) archaic words (vassal, yeoman),
5) barbarisms and foreign words (chic, bon mot, ad infinitum, solo),
6) literary coinages (neologisms).
Colloquial – (лит. стандарт + некоторые оттеночные фамильяр. не делающих речь стилистически сниженной). Повседневная речь, неофициальное общение. (the tube). Phrasal verbs часто имеют помету colloq.
She travels [neutr.] – she gets about [colloq.]
The bomb exploded [neutr.] - The bomb blew off [colloq.]
Такая лексика отмечается в словаре пометой informal.
Однако границы между тремя группами довольно расплывчаты.
The colloquial vocabulary falls into the following groups:

3) jargonisms (thieves "grease" — money or gambler's "erth, for, "three", "owt", "for", two"),
