Our University

My name’s Vera Petrova and this time I’ll tell you about my University and my studies. I live in Murmansk and study here. (I live in Kovdor and study in Murmansk). I’m a full-time student. I study at Murmansk branch of St. Petersburg University of State Fire Service, EMERCOM. To my mind it’s one of the finest country’s higher educational institutions.

Our University is situated in Leninsky area, Sadovaia street, 9. Director of the Universityis Suslenkova Elvira Bronislavovna, candidate of pedagogical Sciences. The instructors are highly qualified teachers and scientists. They conduct independent research work and have pedagogical practice.

Studying at our University gives a solid background in all spheres of knowledge and prepares for practical work. Full-time courselasts four or five years. Our University provides training in such specialties as “Fire Safety” (qualification - engineer of fire safety), “Forensics” (engineering and technical expertise) with the qualification of “legal expert” or assignment with the person qualification (degree) “Bachelor”, and “Technospheric safety (Safety of technological processes and production)”.

Nowadays it is a large school where about 300 students are currently enrolled. The majority is extramural students, and the rest are full-time students, like me. My specialty is “Forensics”. We learn Maths, History, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, English, Pedagogics and Psychology,Computering, Information Security, Management, Law (Jurisprudence). My favourite subject is …

The university’s a four-storey(ed) building, It has a director’s study, a director deputy’s study, a reception room, a teachers’ room, chairs. The library is not large but meets all modern requirements. Each workstation is equipped with individual reading room means of illumination. An electronic library of the university has an access for students, instructors, employees through an internal server of the university. There is also an equipped medical room of fist aid, the canteen where the food is not expensive and the prices are affordable for everybody.

The classrooms for lectures and seminars are equipped with stationary multimedia projectors, with modern equipment for demonstration and viewing of manuals on digital media, interactive educational boards, for practical classes on professional cycle subjects. The acoustics is very good though sometimes it’s very noisy when the students chat during the studies.

Computer classes with virtual laboratories in accordance with the curriculum have computers with an access to the international computer network Internet, to Russian and international news sites that can significantly extend the capabilities of educational, training, scientific and methodical process. The necessary legal and regulatory information can be found in the database of computer classes. Many students from my group want to make progress in learning English and these facilities will certainly help them.

Besides there is a hostel where nonresident students live, the others live with their families or rent the apartments. The university has no gym but it’s rented for P.T. lessons.
