1. Subject to exemption permitted by law, pilotage in Wellington is compulsory for vessels of over 100 tons net register tonnage.

The pilot vessel is not normally on station outside the entrance, and vessels requiring a pilot are required to give 24 hours’ notice by radio of their expected time of arrival off the port limits. A second notice confirming or amending the first should be sent four hours before the expected time of arrival. Pilotage is compulsory northward of a line from Gordon point to the opposite shore.

2. Tidal Streams at the entrance to the E channel are shown by means of a table, on the chart. The streams run generally in the direction of the channel, and in the narrows, they attain a Spring rate of 1Ѕ knots, but less over the banks. During freshets, the ebb stream runs for a longer period, and its rate increases to a maximum of 2 knots, with a corresponding reduction in the duration and rate of the flood stream.

3. Directions. There is a narrow channel between New Stone and Outer Froward Point, on the coast 5 cables N, which can be used by small craft with local knowledge, but because of the irregular nature of the ground and of the SE set of the flood stream it is prudent to give this locality a wide berth.

The approach from E is clear but coming from W the shore should be given a berth of at least 2 cables to avoid Black Rock.

From either direction make for a position about 1 cable NW of Garmouth Pier-head and thence steer for the harbour entrance with the leading marks in line bearing 187°.

With a strong wind against the tidal stream care should be taken to avoid the deep hole N of Black Rock because of great overfalls and a dangerous sea.

4. Leading light-beacons (white posts; white triangles, point up) are situated on Ballast quay, on the S side of the harbour. An obstruction, with a depth of 2.7m., lies close N off these light-beacons.
