— Yes, You’re right. The UN is a family of interconnected agencies, programmes and funds cooperating for progress and peace on the Earth. I’m working at the UN Secretariat.

— The Secretariat works in New York, the USA. It carries out the substantive and administrative work under the control and direction of the UN General Assembly, the Security Council and other main bodies. It is headed by the Secretary General who provides overall administrative guidance.

— The Secretariat consists of departments and offices with a total staff of about 9,000 persons. Its duty stations include the UN Headquarters in New York as well as the UN offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi.

— It functions under the regular budget drawn from some 160 countries. Some bodies like the UN Children’s Emergency Fund, World Heath Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization and some others have their own governing bodies, budgets and secretariats as well.

— The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

— The UN Charter is the fundamental document of the UN. It is somewhat an international treaty providing basis for international relations and cooperation in various spheres of life.

— There are 193 Member-States in the UN. All of them, big and small, have the right to express their views on a wide range of issues. The work of the UN reaches every corner of the globe.

— Какие проблемы решает ООН?

— The Organization works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugees protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality and the advancement of women, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing landmines, expanding food production, and more, in order to achieve its goals and coordinate efforts for a safer world for this and future generations.
