The third conditional
• We use the third conditional to talk about possible events in the past that didn’t happen. To form third conditional sentences, we use if+ past perfect + would have + past participle: If we’d set out earlier, we would have arrived on time. (= We didn’t set out early and we didn’t arrive on time.) If you’d told me about the party, I would have come. (= You didn’t tell me about the party and I didn’t come.)
• We can also use could have or might have:If I’d known you were in town, I could have met you. If she’d worked harder, she might have passed her exam.
• We use the past perfect (not would have) in the //clause: If you’d invited me, would have come. (Not If you would have invited me, I would have come.)
