Manufacturing

The UK is the 6th largest manufacturer of goods in the world according to the value of its outputs. In 2009 manufacturing was the 3rd largest sector in the UK economy after business services & the wholesale/ retail sector in terms of UK GDP.

Manufacturing represented over 11 % of the UK economy. In 2009 4 major UK industries were:

-food, beverages & tobacco.

-chemicals & pharmaceuticals

- publishing & printing

- fabrical metals.

They were the main contributors to manufacturing GVA (gross value added) & employment.

GVA + taxes on products – subsides of products = GDP.

The production of automobile & aerospace equipment plays a major role.

The UK aerospace industry is the 2nd largest in the world with companies such as BAE Systems (the world’s second largest defence contractor) & Rolls-Royce (the world’s 2nd largest aircraft engine maker- эти двигатели в Боингах)

Automobile industry. The UK has one of the largest premium car industries in the world after Germany.

Although the UK lost many of its top auto brands in 1980-1990 with flag-ship names like Rover, MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover & Aston Martin being taken over by BMW & American Ford, the manufacturing is still based in the UK & allows for a revival of the brands. + GM.

There’s a huge Nissan plant in Sunderland (North East England).

A hatchback?

Indian Tata Motors bought Jaguar Land Rover for 25 bln $ from Ford in June 2008.

Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automotive secured ownership of MG Rover in 2005 producing British-design cars in China.

Rover brand name passed to Ford in 2006.

Ford is the maker of luxury 4 * 4

Britain has become the car capital of the world as experts predict it’ll be making 2,2 mln vehicles a year by 2016.

Mini, Jaguar & Range Rover are all on the rise after 6 bln pounds of mostly private funds have been ploughed into importing factories & research into new models.

Britain is producing MORE cars than Germany. 8 out of 10 cars built in Britain today end up on foreign roads as British-made cars are now sold in more than 170 countries.

In 2012 Br. Sold more cars abroad than it has imported for the first time since 1976.
