Located in the west of the USA, comprised of the following states: Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.
It lies west of the Midwest and is named after the rugged, majestic Rocky Mountains, which cut through it. In addition, the region has areas of deserts & plains.
Major cities of the region: Denver, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City.
Denver – has been known as the Queen City of the Plains and the Queen City of the West, because of its important role in the agricultural industry of the high-plains region in eastern Colorado.
Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populous city of Utah (under 200,000). The city is located in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley surrounded by the Great Salt Lake (winter Olympics 2002).
Rich deposits of gold, silver, and other metals first attracted settlers to the region.
Minerals found in the Rocky Mountains include significant deposits of copper, gold, lead, molybdenum, silver, tungsten & zinc.
The Wyoming Basin and several smaller areas contain significant reserves of coal, natural gas, oil shale (сланец) and petroleum.
Mining remains an important economic activity, but manufacturing is now the chief source of income.
High technology in the area is developed in the state of Colorado which ranks as one of the most promising high-tech economies in the US ahead of California.
Agriculture and forestry are major industries in the area. Agriculture includes dry land & irrigated farming and livestock grazing.
Tourist region. Yellowstone, widely held to be the 1st natonal park in the world, is the US national park located primarily in Wyoming, extending into Montana and Idaho.
The population of the Rocky Mountain States Region includes people of European descent, as well as Blacks, Mexican American, and American Indians.
Mormons’ ancestors founded a religious community in Utah in the 1800s.
