US Census Results and Projections

The United States conducted its 22nd population census in 2000 — a record of taking

a census every ten years since 1790. The US Constitution requires that a decennial census be taken for reapportionment of seats in the US House of Representatives. In practice, the census also provides the information needed for congressional districts to

be drawn for the 435 House members. Here is some data from the US Bureau of the Census with 2000 Census results and further projections:

As you may see, the five most populated states in the US are California, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania and this underscores the growing populations in the South and West.

Population in Major US Cities

Washington, DC is the national capital of the USA. Unlike in most countries (at least in Europe), it is not the largest city in terms of population. It is currently inhabited by some 572,059 people, most of whom work for the government and administration. The Table

below presents the top 10 most populated US cities.

The US is indeed a country of megapolises where millions of people are concentrated in huge urban areas. It is often difficult to say where on city ends and the other one begins! Thus we may distinguish the Boston Washington megapolis (the BosWash) in the east, the San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego megapolis (the San-San) in the west, the megapolis including San Antonio, Houston and New Orleans in the south, and one near the Great Lakes with Chicago and Cleveland as its nucleus.

Here are some superlative statistics about settlements in the USA.

• Northernmost city Barrow, Alaska

• Southernmost city Hilo, Hiwaii

• Eastenmost city Eastport, Maine

• Westernmost city Atka, Alaska

• Highest settlement Climax, Colorado

• Lowest settlement Calipatria, California

According to the US Bureau of the Census, the resident population of the United

States, projected to March, 2006 was 298,291,041 people. It is currently the third largest

country in the world in terms of population (4.5 per cent of the world popuation live here).

On October 17th, 2006 the population already overcame the 300 million mark. Thus the

US population continues to grow fast.
