Pre-reading tasks

Task 1. With a partner discuss the following questions:

1. How many languages do you speak?

2. What are the functions of a language?

3. What is your mother tongue? Is it spoken in any other countries?

4. Do you like the way your language is changing?

5. What do you think the future of your own language is?

6. What is your second language?

7. What do you know about origin of languages?

8. What have you heard about the Tower of Babel?

9. Do we need a universal language?

Task 2. Read the dictionary definitions. Match the words with their definitions: accent, body language, communication, culture, dialect, jargon, journalese, language, legalese, mother tongue, native speaker, slang, speech, terminology.
