Sessions:

Developing Digitally – the Journey from Refugee to Immigrant

We are now surrounded by a dazzling array of digital technology in almost all aspects of everyday life, and it seems a foregone conclusion by many that unless we adapt to this tidal wave of change, we will be left standing. But let’s pause for a moment and ask ourselves some questions: Why use such technology in everyday life? Why use such technology in teaching? Why use such technology at all? This session will attempt to answer these questions and more as we look at some practical ways of dealing with aspects of the digital revolution in our lives and in our classrooms. The session will be illustrated with material from Pearson’s revolutionary blended course MyGrammarLab.

The Speaking Skill: What and How to Assess

You set up a sparkling speaking activity and the whole class launches into a stream of animated communication… or do they? This session will look at what is involved in successful spoken communication, ways of helping students to develop their speaking, and importantly how we as teachers can react to student output. We will consider common criteria used to assess students’ strengths and weaknesses, and move on to explore practical ways in which we can apply these, in so doing gaining a clearer picture of the learners’ future needs.
