BASIC MANAGEMENT STYLES OF EMPLOYERS

An employer ’s main job is to manage people. Managing people means directing the work of employees. It includes planning work schedules, solving problems, hiring and terminating of employees.

There are different ways in which the job of managing employees is carried out. These ways are called management or leadership styles.

There are three basic categories of management styles. These are: authoritarian (or autocratic), democratic (or participative), and laissez-faire (pronounced «lay say fair»).

An authoritarian (or autocratic) leader does not consult employees, and they are not allowed to give any input. Employees are expected to obey orders without receiving any explanations. Each employee reports directly to an authoritarian leader. An authoritarian leader tells everyone how many hours to work and what clothing to wear. He likes to be in charge of the entire business andallows his employees little freedom to make decisions of their own.

A democratic (or participative) leader encourages his employees to be a part of the decision making process. He keeps all the employees informed about everything that affects their work and shares decision making. This style leadership requires the leader to be a coach who has the final say, but gathers information from staff members before making any decision. A democratic leader holds many meetings during which he asks the advice and the ideas of his employees. In general, he encourages them to work together to help him to run a company. A democratic leader allows employees to take part in the management of the companyand profits from their ideas and suggestions.

A laissez-faire management style is also known as a «hands-off» style. This is a style where a leader provides little or no direction and gives his employees as much freedom as possible. All authority or power is given to the employees and they have the right to determine goals and to resolve problems on their own. This is an effective style to use when employees are highly skilled, experienced and educated.
