LEAD-IN: What is Digital Signal Processing?

The signals relevant for digital signal processing are not of digital nature at all. Before the digital part of a

system starts operation, the incoming

signals have to be fed into an analog-to-

digital-converter. Subsequently, highly

complex algorithms can be applied to the

digitized signals. With an analog system

their realization would not be possible.

Examples for such algorithms are speech

coding, noise suppression, acoustic echo

compensation, speech recognition,

speaker localization and identification as

well as compression of speech and video

data (MP3 resp. MPEG).

1. What concepts do you think of when you look at the picture? Give your own interpretation of what DSP is. Complete the diagram below with the words and terms concerning the Digital Signal Processing field.
