WORD BUILDING: Stress Shift

Here are some rules that can help you understand where to put the stress. But do not rely on them too much, because there are many exceptions. "Feel" the music of the language and add the stress naturally. There are many two-syllable words in English which meaning and class change with a change in stress.

e.g.1: present (two syllables)
PREsent is a noun (gift) or an adjective (opposite of absent)

preSENT is a verb (to offer)

e.g.2: EXport, IMport, COntractand Object are nouns

exPORT, imPORT, conTRACtand, obJECT are verbs

Stress on penultimate syllable (penultimate = second from end)

Words ending in –ic: GRAPHic, 101eographic, geoLOGic

Words ending in –sion and –tion: teleVIsion, revelation

Stress on ante-penultimate syllable (ante-penultimate = third from end)

Words ending in -cy, -ty, -phy, -gy: deMOcracy, dependaBIlity, phoTOgraphy,

geOLogy

Words ending in –al: CRItical, geological
