Similar to Lee Metford and Lee Enfield cavalry carbines from which it was converted, the RIC pattern was specially constructed to allow the fixing of the pattern 1885 sword bayonet.

2. -Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle Mk1 (SMLE) Cal 303 LSA & Co Britain 1904.

Lee Metford and Lee Enfield rifles were first pitted against the modern European weapons during the Boer War. GThis experience led to the introduction of a shortened Lee Enfield with improved sighting, a sliding charger guide mounted on the bolthead and easier reloading and long range dial sights. Approved in 1902, the SMLE, and its many variants or "marks" remained as the standard British and Australian service weapon for the next 50 years.

3 - Short Magazine L.E Rifle No1 MKIII Enfield. Great Britain 1909.

The first type of weapon manufactured at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory. The MKIII was introduced in 1907 to improve battle efficiancy and simplify manufacture. Changes included the firing of a charger bridge across the top of the receiver to enable quicker reloading and strengthening of the action. In 1928 the nomenclature of all SMLE's was changed to the Rifle No1. This particular rifle was issued in New Zealand and is fitted with a 1907 Pattern Hooked quillion bayonet.

4 - No1 MKIII* SAF Lithgow Australia 1953.

The MkIII* was introduced in 1918 as the wartime expediency and basically differs from the MkIII with the omission of the long range dial and aperture sight, windage adjustment on the backsight and the magazine cut off. This rifle was the workhorse of Australian soldiers from WW1 until the Korean war. 640,000 of the MKIII and MKIII* rifles were manufactured at Lithgow until production ceased in 1956

This weapon is a minor variant of it's predecesor the Lee Metford Mk1 and was approved in 1892. It was the first small caliber magazine rifle prodused in the British service. It features an 8 round single row magazine with cut off, a long range dial sight and no safety latch. It saw service with the Victorian, Queensland and New SOuth Waled forces. Some of the Victorian Mounted rifles were issued with the rifle in the Boer War.

2 - Magazine Lee Metford Carbine Mk1 Enfield GB 1896.

This Lee Metford Carbine is 10 inches shorter and 2 lb's lighter than the rifle II and was approved by the ministry in 1894.
