The increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment

Cause Solution

  • Industrial activities → air pollution + water pollution
  • Deforestation for wooden or agricultural products → soil erosion.
  • Oil production → depletion of natural resources

  • Government impose punishment on companies that harm the environment during the production process
  • Heighten companies’ awareness of the environmental impacts of their practices.
  • Encourage the use of eco-friendlier products.

Nowadays, as more consumer goods are manufactured, more damage has been inflicted to the environment. I will outline several reasons for this and put forward some measures to this issue.

First of all, the increase in the production of consumer products harms the environment in two ways: the chemical by-products from the manufacturing process and the mass production of disposable goods. As more goods are produced, more toxic wastes and emissions are released from factories into nature. Water sources are contaminated, and the air is severely polluted, which results in the deaths of many marine and terrestrial animals. Also, to accommodate customers’ ever-increasing demands, more single-use products are introduced, most of which are non-biodegradable. Though having a short lifespan, these products can remain as wastes for thousands of years, turning our planet into a huge landfill and posing a threat to the living habitats of all creatures.

Actions must be taken as soon as possible to minimize the negative impacts on environment arising from the increasing amount of consumer goods. First, companies should promote the use of eco-friendlier materials. In addition, many governments are also encouraging the development of more sustainable manufacturing processes. For instance, many states in the U.S offer tax breaks and incentives for businesses using renewable energy, and some firms are even allowed to purchase green energy at cheaper prices than traditional fossil fuels.

In conclusion, there are two main reasons why the environment is severely impacted by the increase in production of consumer goods. To address this issue, governments and companies must join hands to make the production lines more environmentally friendly by switching to greener materials.

Pollution

There are many kinds of pollution. Air, water, and land can be polluted. Some pollution is caused by nature, such as foods, forest fires, and volcanoes. People are the major cause of pollution. We pollute the air with our cars, homes, and factories. Smoke from factories and car exhaust makes the air looks gray and smoggy. Some people cannot go outside when the air is very bad! We pollute the water by dumping garbage and chemicals in the water. Plants and animals die because of the pollution in the water. We pollute the soil with chemicals and garbage. We harm the land by cutting down trees in the forest, especially to build roads and new houses without careful planning and thinking.

The only way to save our environment is to think about pollution. How can you stop or limit pollution? How do we protect our environment? Conservation is one way to protect our environment. Conservation is the wise use and protection of our environment. We can control water pollution by not producing as much as waste and by proper disposal of sewage and garbage. We can take care of recreation land by cleaning up, after ourselves and not causing more pollution. Carpooling and public transportation will help reduce air pollution.

Recycling is a type of conservation. Recycling is reusing items over again or in a new way. Recycling can help us conserve our natural resources so they will last many more years.

1 climate change Most scientists believe that climate change today is happening largely because of human industrial activities.
2 atmosphere The atmosphere is being polluted partly because too many vehicles are emitting large quantities of smoke.
3 greenhouse gas We need a global system for limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
4 desertification Trees help to prevent desertification, as well as providing shade and firewood.
5 Pollution/ contamination Increasing levels of air pollution in industrial zones are having a negative effect on inhabitants of nearby areas.
6 pollutants Large quantities of pollutants such as CO2 are being released every day, which leads to higher levels of air pollution.
7 waste Toxic waste from factories is being dumped directly into nearby rivers and does great harm to the animals living there.
8 exhaust Exhaust from cars is the main reason for the city’s pollution.
9 emit The atmosphere in is being polluted partly because too many vehicles are emitting large quantities of smoke.
10 impact The environmental impact of the industrial activities in this region is enormous.
11 toxic Toxic waste from factories is being dumped directly into nearby rivers and does great harm to the animals living there.
12 deforestation Deforestation is the third major contributor to global warming.
13 global warming The destruction of the rainforests is contributing to global warming.

Do you think that we should protect our natural environment?

I think that protecting the environment is the responsibility of all the people in the world. We need to act out some things before it’s too late. In my opinion, I’d like to share you some possible solution for this problem.

- Use public mode of transportation: Encourage people to use more and more public modes of transportation to reduce pollution.

- Save energy: Switch off fans and lights when you are going out. Large amount of fossil fuels are burnt to produce electricity. You can save the environment from degradation by reducing the amount of fossil fuels to be burned.

- Understand the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Do not throw away items that are of no use to you. In-fact reuse them for some other purpose. For e.g. you can use old jars to store cereals or pulses.

- Emphasis on clean energy: Clean energy technologies like solar, wind and geothermal are more and more popular. Government should encourage and favour the people to use it.

- Use electric saving devices: This is a simple and effective that all of us can do right now.

Several attempts are being made on personal, industrial and governmental levels to save our environment in the world now. You and me, we need to contribute to save our green planet.

1. I’d prefer to collect waste separately because it’s important to go green nowadays.

 2. I’d prefer to collect waste separately because it’s an easy way to do more to protect the environment.

3. I’d prefer to collect waste in the way shown in the second picture. I don’t think that putting domestic rubbish in the same garbage can is harmful for the environment.

Global Warming

· Gases such as carbon dioxide trap heat from the sun

· This causes global temperatures to rise

· This process is known as the greenhouse effect

· Human activity is a major factor in the rise of the greenhouse gases

· Factories and vehicles produce emissions and exhaust fumes

· Many developing countries are becoming industrialized

· The number of cars on our streets is growing

· Cheap air travel is allowing more people to fly

Effects of Global Warming

· Global warming will have a significant impact on our planet

· Rising temperature will cause melting of the polar ice caps

· Sea levels will rise

· We can expect more extreme weather conditions

· Flooding and droughts may become more common

Impacts of Humans on the Environment

· The increasing world population is putting pressure on natural resources

· Fossil fuels like oil and gas are running out

· We are destroying wildlife habitats

· We have cut down enormous areas of rainforest

· This has led to the extinction of many species of animals and plants

Solutions to Environment Problems

· Governments could introduce laws to limit emissions from factories

· They should invest in renewable energy from solar, wind or water power

· They could impose ‘green taxes’ on drivers and airlines companies

· Government campaigns should promote recycling

· Natural areas and wild animals should be protected

· Individuals should also try to be greener

· We should take fewer flights abroad for holidays

· We should take public transport rather than driving

· We should choose products with less packaging

· We should recycle as much as possible

Waste/Rubbish

· The amount of waste that we produce has increased

· This problem is a result of our consumer culture

· Products are not made to last

· If something breaks, we throw it away and buy a new one

· Advertisers encourage to buy the newest fashions

· Packaging is an important part of selling

· Most foods are sold in non-biodegradable plastics packaging

· The amount of household waste is growing

· This waste ends up in landfill sites

Litter

· People do not think about the consequences of dropping rubbish

· They assume that somebody is paid to clean the street

· Plastic packaging does not break down easily

· Most of the litter seen on streets is fast food packaging

Recycling and other Solutions

· Companies should make goods that last longer

· They should not use so much packaging

· Governments should be stricter, about waste produced by companies

· They should put legal limits on packaging

· Consumers should avoid buying over-packaged products

· We should recycle and reuse useful

· There are collection banks for glass, paper and plastic bottles

· Households can use several rubbish bins to separate waste

· Recycling saves energy and raw

Nuclear Power: Positives

· There are several benefits to build more nuclear power stations

· Fossil fuel like oil and gas are running out

· Nuclear power is a sustainable energy source

· It can be used to produce electricity without wasting natural resources

· It could replace the use of natural resources like coal, oil or gas

· Nuclear power stations are cleaner than fossil fuel power stations

· They could help to reduce carbon emissions that cause global warming

· The risks of accidents are being reduced

Nuclear Power: Negatives

· Opponents of nuclear power worry about the safety of power stations

· The building of new nuclear power stations is unpopular

· Nobody wants to live near one

· Nuclear waste disposal is a significant problem

· There is currently no way to decontaminate radioactive material

· People worry that terrorists could steal radioactive materials

· It is safer to produce energy from solar, wind or water

Ecotourism is relating to travelling to areas of natural or ecological interest to observe wildlife and learn about the environment. It’s a good type of tourism and it brings lots of benefits. Firstly, it has minimal impact on the environment. Moreover, money from the tourist can go back conservation of the environment. Through ecotourism, we can build awareness and respect for the culture and environment at tourist. This experience will bring tourists both the consciousness of protecting environment and fun. The most important thing is that ecotourism helps to protect wildlife habitat. We don’t have to cut down trees but plant more trees and protect our natural environment.

List five advantages of ecotourism.

- Ecotourism has minimal impact on the environment

- It helps to build awareness and respect for the local culture and environment

- It offers positive experiences for tourists.

- It brings more jobs and benefits to local people

- It helps to protect wildlife habitat.

The government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens’ health rather than on protecting the environment.

Some people think that the government should allocate more financial resources to medical research instead of environmental protection. I entirely disagree with this statement.

Both medical research activities and environmental protection are equally critical to human well-being. Throughout history, we have had to cope with countless consequences of environmental damage, some of which even threatened the survival of whole communities. We have also been struggling to combat diseases that could cripple the medical systems of entire countries. The peril that people face from those threats cannot be compared with one another by any measures; if they were to be addressed, tremendous government funding would be needed.

Furthermore, preserving the environment is a necessary part of protecting human health. It is true that funding medical research activities is the best way to cure the many serious diseases that are now causing so many problems all over the world, such as Covid-19. However, it is flawed to use this reason to downplay the significance of environmental protection and the need for government funding. In reality, we are facing many other severe health crises that arise from environmental pollution. For example, high levels of air and water contamination are leading to the increased number of cancer cases and deaths. Extreme weather conditions caused by global warming are also among the greatest drivers behind the deterioration of public health.

In conclusion, although medical research is certainly important and should be properly funded, I disagree that it should receive more money from the government than environmental protection.
