Exercise 6. Explain the use of articles in the following song lyrics and quotes

1. Eleanor Rigby

Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been,

Lives in a dream,

Waits at the window

Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door.

Who is it for?

All the lonely people

Where do they all come from?

All the lonely people

Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie,

Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear,

No one comes near.

Look at him working,

Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there.

What does he care?

(The Beatles, Eleanor Rigby)

2. Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Eagerly I wished the morrow; — vainly I had sought to borrow

From my books surcease of sorrow — sorrow for the lost Lenore —

For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore —

       Nameless here for evermore.

(Edgar Allen Poe, Raven)

3. It was twenty years ago today

Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play,

They've been going in and out of style,

But they're guaranteed to raise the smile,

So may I introduce to you,

The act you've known for all these years,

Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

(The Beatles, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)

4. When the shrill winds are screaming

And the evening is still,

Lady Samantha glides over the hill

In a long satin dress that she wears every day.

Her home is the hillside, her bed is the grave.

(Elton John, Lady Samantha)

5. Mister Sandman, bring me a dream.

Make him the cutest that I've ever seen,

Give him the word that I'm not a rover,

Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over.

Mister Sandman, bring me a dream

Give him a pair of eyes with a come-hither gleam,

Give him a lonely heart like a Pagliacci,

And lots of wavy hair like a Liberace.

(Emmylou Harris, Mister Sandman)

6. The next day was hanging day, the sky was overcast and black.

Big Jim lay covered up, killed by a penknife in the back,

And Rosemary on the gallows, she didn't even blink,

The hanging judge was sober, he hadn't had a drink,

The only person on the scene missing was the Jack of Hearts.

(Bob Dylan, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts)

7. Once upon a time Kris Kringle stole a beat up Maverick parked behind my house.

He used a screwdriver to jimmy the lock,

After that he jumped into the stolen car and started up the motor.

He drove away the stolen car in hot pursuit.

Kris Kringle was a car thief.

(Wesley Willis, Kris Kringle Was a Car Thief)

2. Professor McGonagall flinched, but Dumbledore, who was unsticking two lemon drops, seemed not to notice.

3. And then the story started to spread: Harry Potter, the famous Harry Potter, their hero of two Quidditch matches, had lost them all those points, him and a couple of other stupid first years.

4. “No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles, and more children than they can afford."

5. Mr. Ronald Weasley and Miss Granger will be most relieved you have come round, they have been extremely worried.

6. Uncle Vernon stopped at last outside a gloomy-looking hotel on the outskirts of a big city.

7. Madam Bones looked down at Mrs Figg in silence. Minister Fudge was not looking at her at all, but fidgeting with his papers.

8. “Yeah, Quirrell was a great teacher,” said Harry loudly, “there was just that minor drawback of him having Lord Voldemort sticking out of the back of his head.”

9. Nobody wasted their breath pretending to feel very sad about the Riddles, for they had been most unpopular. Elderly Mr. and Mrs. Riddle had been rich, snobbish, and rude, and their grown-up son, Tom, had been, if anything, worse.

10. “Listen to me, Cornelius,” said Dumbledore, taking a step toward Fudge, and once again, he seemed to radiate that indefinable sense of power that Harry had felt after Dumbledore had stunned young Crouch.
