Основным назначением группы Continuous является обозначение действий, протекающих в точно указанное время, либо одновременно с другим действием. Дополнительными характеристиками таких действий является их незаконченность, динамичность и наглядность.
Настоящее продолженное время обозначает действие, происходящее в момент высказывания, и образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола to be в простом настоящем времени: am, is, are и причастия I (Participle I) смыслового глагола – V-ing. На время действия кроме формы глагола могут указывать слова: now – сейчас, at present (at the moment) – в настоящий момент, still – все еще.

The Present Continuous употребляется также:
– для обозначения временной ситуации: I’m living with my friends, until I find a place of my own;

– для выражения запланированного будущего: We are going to a concert tomorrow evening;
– для обозначения часто повторяющейся ситуации (неприятной для других):
You’re always watching television!
В форме Present Continuous обычно не употребляются глаголы, выражающие чувства, восприятия: to be, to like, to feel, to love, to hate, to want, to know, to understand, to belong, to consist, to need, to prefer, to hear, to see, to think, to remember, to realize, to suppose, to mean, to believe, to fit, to contain, to seem.
