Each' referring to both members of a pair

Each, but not every, can refer to both the members of a pair: As they had both worked so hard they each received a bonus


Distributives

Both usually means 'two items considered together'; each considers

two things separately:

/ spoke to both of the twins this morning (i.e. together) / spoke to each of the twins this morning (i.e. separately)
