The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom is the official name of the country which consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK is situated on the British Isles, which lie to the west of the European continent. It is separated from the continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. It is washed on the western coast by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.

Great Britain is the name of the island which is made up of England, Scotland and Wales. England is the southern and central part of the country. Scotland is in the north of the island, and Wales is in the west.

The flag of the UK is known as the Union Jack. The flag has red cross of St. George of England, the white cross of St. Andrew of Scotland, and the red cross of St. Patrick of Ireland, all on the blue background.

The island of Great Britain can be roughly divided into two main regions - Lowland Britain and Highland Britain. The most well-known mountains and chains are the Pennine Chain, the Northern Highlands which contain Ben Nevis, the highest point of the British Isles. There are many rivers in the country. They are not long but deep. The Severn is the longest river and the Thames is the most important and the busiest one.

Great Britain is an island and its climate is rather mild as it is greatly influenced by the sea. Thus the weather is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than in most other countries of Northern Europe.

The UK is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The population of Great Britain is about 60 million and territory is 121000 square miles, 80 per cent of the population live in towns. London, the capital and the chief city of the United Kingdom, is one of the biggest commercial, industrial, cultural, and financial centers in the world. There are many universities, colleges, libraries, museums and theatres in the country. The most famous universities are Cambridge University and Oxford University.

The position of the country is most advantageous for the development of its

industry and trade. Most of Great Britain's industries are concerned with the production of iron and steel goods, textiles and chemicals. The biggest industrial cities are Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield and some others.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a parliamentary monarchy. The British Parliament consists of the House of Commons (elected every five years) and the House of Lords, The Prime Minister is usually the leader of the party that has a majority in the House of Commons. All the affairs of the state are conducted in the name of the Queen (or King), but it is the Prime Minister who is the ruler of the country. The main political parties in the country are the Conservative (Tory), and the Labor parties.
