5. Put the parts of the text in the correct order to make a logic story.

1) Postcards of Sunderland’s black cat were soon selling more than the combined total of those of all the team’s individual players, while there was also a popular series of postcards featuring Amos, Barnsley’s ass.

2) Football seemed overrun with mascots during the 1908-09 campaign. Most appear to have been employed to produce luck in the FA Cup, a competition where perhaps that extra margin of fortune was the difference between success and failure. That season Manchester United was supported by a billy goat, Newcastle by a Great Dane, Sunderland by a black cat, Bradford City by a bantam cock and Sheffield Wednesday by a live monkey adorned in blue and white ribbons.

3) Its success was not just a result of the association of black cats with good fortune, but of the fact that the cat is an obvious predator of the magpie, nickname of the club’s bitter local rivals Newcastle United. Although these early football mascots were essentially symbols of good fortune they were also used in marketing albeit in a very limited way.

4) The animal was found inside the Roker Park ground when the club met Bury on 2 January 1909 during a relatively lean spell on the field. The team responded with a 3-1 win and two weeks later went on to win 3-2 at Sheffield United in the first round of the FA Cup and the cat was quickly adopted as the club mascot.

5) United’s success, with billy goat in tow, was followed 12 months later by a Barnsley team, who were runners-up, backed by an ass known as Amos. It is of interest to consider the story of Sunderland’s black cat as perhaps typical of how mascots were ‘born’.

6. Read the text. Are the statements true (A), false (B) or not given (C)?

My friends have always been incredibly important to me as I'm an only child but one friend in particular, Clare, has always been special to me. We've known each other for almost twenty years and we met when we were both teaching at the same school. As soon as she introduced herself I knew that we would be friends. It was clear that we were very much on the same wavelength and had a lot in common and after a couple of months we decided to share a flat together.

What is it that makes her such a good friend? Well, she's totally dependable, funny, tolerant, generous, kind-hearted and almost always upbeat. I really enjoy her company and we can spend hours together just messing around. We have the same sense of humour and spend a lot of time laughing at the silliest things.

Unfortunately, I had to move away recently because I'd been offered a new teaching job. I was worried that we might lose touch as we're no longer in the same country but we've managed to stay as close as ever. Clare is really good at keeping in touch with her family and friends and thanks to phone and email we're able to speak or write to one another almost every day.

Last year she invited me to Canada during the summer holiday to spend time with her family. It was so good to see where she grew up. Her childhood was so different from mine as she was brought up in the country while I grew up in a big city. She's the oldest of six children and the only one who didn't stay close to home so when she goes home she has a lot of catching up to do.

I can't imagine her not being in my life and I must say that I feel incredibly lucky to have her as a friend.
