Task 4. Translate the following passage into Russian from " A second year passed " up to " a bus acci­dent on October 11th, 1951 ”.

Task 1. Look through the text and find all the sentences with the Pas­sive Voice. Put questions to the words in bold type.

1. He was never seen again.

Task 2. Read rules 15 and 16 and make one sentence out of the two given using Oblique mood.

1. Uncle Oscar married Aunt Agatha. That’s why he was unhappy.

2. Aunt Agatha had plenty things to talk about and did so all the time. She didn’t have time to talk to uncle Oscar.

3. Elizabeth and Julian, were unfortunately more influenced by their mother than by their father. They didn’t notice their father at all.

4. Elizabeth and Julian, were unfortunately more influenced by their mother than by their father. Their behaviour was like Aunt Agatha's, too - selfish and greedy.

5. Elizabeth and Julian took no interest in their father's hobby. They didn’t understand their father.

6. Aunt Agatha received a telephone call from Mr. Wilton at the bank. She got to know about her husband’s dissapearance.

7. She saw her children at weekends. It was a satisfactory arrangement for all three of them.

8. The name and address were typewritten. The “I” of the story didn’t guess who was the letter from.

9. The most valuable stamps were missing! Suddenly everything fell into place.

 

Task 3.   Answer the following questions using Oblique Mood. Explain why you think so.

Task 4. Read the story below and retell it using conditional sentences like in the model.

Model: If Ben hadn’t offered to help his neighbour, he wouldn’t have climbed the ladder.

 

Ben offered his neighbour fix the roof. So he climbed up the ladder, but fell and broke his leg. He went to hospital. He met Linda there. They fell in love and got married six months later. In a year their first baby was born.

Retelling tasks

By the moment you’ve done a lot. Prove us that you know some facts and details of the story quite well.

Task 1. Agree or disagree with the following statements. If you don’t agree with some of them share your own points of view.

1. Elizabeth was sure her father fell in love with another woman.

2. Julian was sure that his father had one of these attacks of amnesia.

3. The children were fortunately more influenced by their mother than by their father. That’t why they were very pleasant to communicate with.

4. Uncle Oscar never complained about his dull existence. That is he liked the way he lived.

5. Uncle Oscar’s life was very interesting: every day differed from others.

6. He was very happy while working with his stamps.

7. Elizabeth and Julian shared their father’s interests.

8. Aunt Agatha was missing her husband’s dissapearance and waited for him all her life.

9. It was the address on the envelope that helped to guess where Uncle Oscar was.

10. Uncle Oscar wanted them to find him.
