1) Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the UK refers to children with disabilities or learning difficulties that make it more difficult for them to learn or access education than other children.

2) This can include problems with schoolwork, expressing themselves, behaviour, organizing themselves, relating to adults, making friends or sensory or physical needs.

3) Children with special educational needs are generally integrated into mainstream state schools as long as the schools have the right resources with which to look after them.

4) This means adequate equipment and enough teachers with the skills to give them the education that will help these students achieve their potential.

5) If their disabilities are so severe that they can not be looked after adequately at a mainstream school, it is the responsibility of the local authority to provide funds for that child to go to a special school or be educated at home.

1) Special education is provided for children with moderate or severe learning difficulties (e.g. a hearing, speech, or sight impediment, a physical disability or autism) or a behavioural problem, which prevents or hinders them from attending a mainstream school for their age group.

2) However, whenever possible, children with special education needs (SEN) are educated in mainstream schools, in order to give them the same education as other children.

3) There are around 2,000 SEN schools in the UK (day and boarding schools), most of which are state schools, operated and financed by LEAs.

4) Some special schools are run privately by voluntary bodies, which may receive a grant from central government for capital expenditure and equipment.

5) Some LEAs provide special teaching and facilities for gifted children (those with very high IQs), although there’s little provision for young geniuses.

1) Unlike other teachers who focus primarily on academics, the special education teacher serves both as an educator and as an advocate for students with special needs.

2) His or her schedule is divided among planning, instruction, assessing students and managing their individualized education programs (IEPs).

3) The job is demanding, and it requires the teacher to juggle many responsibilities.

4) These can include scheduling, attending and following up after IEP meetings, writing IEPs with attainable and measurable goals, tracking and reporting student progress on IEP goals, providing guidance to general education teachers who wish to accommodate students.

5) It also includes administering assessments, day-to-day classroom management, planning and instructing, managing and evaluating instructional assistants and other professionals, developing behavior management plans and more.

1) Choosing a school is always a difficult process, and deciding whether your child should attend a special school is particularly emotive, especially if you’re considering moving them from their current mainstream school.

2) Deciding whether to apply for a special school place will depend on many factors, including your child’s social and educational needs, their age and stage of education, the schools that are available, distance and transport arrangements, and so on.

3) Potential benefits of sending your child to a special school include smaller class sizes and higher staff to pupil ratio, experienced and specialist teachers who can tailor work to your child’s needs, facilities and resources tailored to your child’s SEN or disability.

4) However, there may be disadvantages, such as a more limited curriculum, and fewer opportunities to gain recognized qualifications like GCSEs, distance from home, possibly requiring private transport, a lack of opportunities to socialize more widely with pupils of the same age and with different abilities.

5) The best strategy is to arrange a visit to the schools you’re considering, to feel the atmosphere, speak to the staff, see the other children who are there and look at the resources and equipment on offer.

1) Primary school teachers build a special bond with their students as they watch them grow and learn throughout the year.

2) These educators are knowledgeable about a variety of subjects, as many design lesson plans across subjects to teach their students the basics of reading, writing and mathematics.

3) They also frequently work one-on-one with students to assess their abilities and challenge them to overcome any weaknesses.

4) Many primary school teachers take a playful approach, using props, games and songs to actively engage their students.

5) It's their job to not only create an academic and fun environment for the kids, but to also interact with the parents to communicate the students’ progress.

1) More than most other professions, the task of teaching special education requires people who possess a particular set of qualities.

2) If you are considering the teaching profession, rest assured that if you get excited about situations where others might give up, you just may be perfect for this rewarding and life-changing career.

3) Special education teachers are good-humored, because h aving your own well-tuned sense of humor will lighten your days and invigorate your teaching of special education students.

4) Good teachers are organized, they are accepting of their students, c reative in teaching methods a nd even-tempered.
