Types, formats, and categories of the contemporary architectural competitions

It is important to know the types, formats, and categories of international competitions in order to choose the right one for you and your team. There are nine different competition types, which characterized as follows: One-staged juried competitions and Two-stage juried competitions. Both can be conceptual or real commissions. Conceptual type of competitions includes: Hypothetical competitions and Design ideas competitions. Real commissions competitions are: Developer/Architect Competitions, Design/Build Competitions, RFQ Competition, Interviews with Design Concepts, and International Union Architects (UIA) competition [1].

There are three major competition eligibility categories: Open: This is a competition that casts as broad a net as possible, may or may not include students, interns or other design professionals. Prerequisites and required accreditation are up to the competition sponsor. Limited: Restrictions on who can enter such a competition vary, but typically revolve around geographical location, level of experience (for example: Competitions limited to students), office size or familiarity with a particular building typology. Invited: For an architect to be an included in such a competition they need to be formally asked to participate by competition sponsor.

There is also Architectural Research Competition type, which is focusing on the specific topic research and paper presentations [1].
