There is no place like home

About 64 % of the British population live in houses or flats that they own or buy in instalments. Most other people live in council accommodation, about 10 % rent from private landlords.

There are different types of houses in Great Britain. The most popular types are terraced or row houses, detached and semi-detached houses, mansions, cottages, bungalows.

A terraced or row house represents several houses, usually two-storey, joined together in a row or terrace.

A detached house is a structure which is not joined to another building on any side. As for a semi-detached house, it is joined to another house by one shared wall.

Bungalows are one-storey houses that are usually detached. The word comes from Hindi and means a house in the Bengal style. Bungalows are popular with older people who may find it difficult to climb up and down stairs.

A cottage is a small house in the country or in a village.

After World War II a lot of blocks of flats were built very quickly. Today there are more blocks of flats and townhouses in cities and towns than in rural areas. About 20 % of the population live in flats. (900)

III. Read the text and say what the main stages of erecting a house are, then make up a précis.
