Практическая: формирование у учащихся умений в письменной практике и в написании эссе; практикование навыков чтения

Развивающая: развитие умения аргументировать и доказывать свое мнение, развитие способности концентрировать внимание и распределять его, развитие ассоциативного мышления, воображения.

Образовательная: изучение основных принципов написания эссе, использование английского языка для повышения общей культуры учащихся.

Воспитательная: формирование уважительного отношения к иностранному языку как средству межкультурного общения; развитие умения работать коллективно.

Правила начисания эссе For-and-against

Название говорит само за себя: вы приводите аргументы «за» и «против» какого-то явления. План эссе на английском языке следующий:

• Введение. В нем вы подводите читателя к теме обсуждения.
• Основная часть. Вы приводите аргументы «за» и «против» какого-то действия или явления. При этом не надо высказывать свою точку зрения, придерживайтесь нейтралитета.
• Заключение. Только тут вы выражаете свое отношение к теме и делаете вывод.
• Introductory paragraph – здесь вы сталкиваетесь основными задачами: во-первых, вы четко оговариваете тему. Помните о том, что вам необходимо перефразировать утверждение, которое служит темой вашего сочинения, но ни в коем случае не повторять его слово в слово. Во-вторых, вам следует помнить о том, что здесь вы не выражаете свою точку зрения, а лишь констатируете факт того, что рассматриваемый вопрос может иметь несколько точек зрения, которые вы и будете рассматривать далее в своем эссе.
• Main body – основная часть как правило будет состоять из двух абзацев, каждый из которых будет представлять одну из возможных точек зрения. Помните о том, что вам следует четко придерживаться одной идеи в одном абзаце. Т. е. один из них будет предоставлять аргументы «за», в то время как во втором будут обсуждаться аргументы «против». Ну и, конечно же, не забывайте о topic sentences, речь о которых шла в предыдущей статье.
• Conclusion – заключение является единственной частью вашего эссе, в которой вы можете все же высказать свою точку зрения, но вы также можете придерживаться нейтральной позиции, продолжая тон всего эссе.

Итак, что еще необходимо взять во внимание, приступая к написанию “for and against” essays?

• Составьте список аргументов «за» и «против» для того, чтобы приступая к написанию, у вас уже имелись сформулированные идеи, и вам осталось только выбрать те, которые вы считаете более удачными или убедительными.
• Постарайтесь подкрепить свои аргументы примерами.
• Помните о том, что параграф не может состоять только из одного предложения.
• Используйте исключительно формальный стиль.
• Постарайтесь использовать какие-либо цитаты, которые подходят к теме вашего эссе.

И, конечно же, фразы, которые помогут вам выразить свои идеи:

• Чтобы представить идеи: one major advantage / disadvantage, a further advantage / disadvantage, one point of view in favour of / against.
• Чтобы перечислить идеи: to start with, to begin with, firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally, in the first place, last but not least.
• Чтобы добавить информацию к уже представленной идее: apart from this / that, besides, in addition to, furthermore, what is more, there is another side to the issue / question / argument of, not to mention (the fact) that, also, not only … but also / as well.
• Чтобы представить противоположные идеи: it may be said / argued / claimed that, nonetheless, nevertheless, however, still, yet, but, whereas, despite / in spite of (the fact that), although, though, even though, while, whilst, regardless of the fact that, even so, on the other hand.
• Чтобы привести примеры: for example, for instance, such as, like, in particular, particularly, especially, this is (clearly) illustrated / shown by the fact that…, the / a clear / striking / typical example of (this)…, the fact that... shows / illustrates that…
• Чтобы сделать вывод: in conclusion, on balance, all things considered, to sum up, all in all, finally / lastly, taking everything into account / consideration, to conclude.

Should cars be banned from city centres?
Most people would agree that cars have made our lives much easier. They have, however, brought many problems as well. Many people now believe that there should be a total ban on cars from our city centres. Undoubtedly, this suggestion has both advantages and disadvantages.
There are many positive aspects to banning cars from city centres. To begin with, it would help to drastically reduce air and noise pollution. This is extremely important, especially as the carbon dioxide from car exhausts is seriously harming the environment and our health. In addition, it would probably reduce the number of accidents and generally make the city centre a more pleasant place to be.
On the other hand, banning cars totally from city centres would have its disadvantages. Firstly, it would inconvenience millions of people. Cars are faster and more comfortable than public transport and do not follow fixed routes. Also, it is likely that public transport would be much more crowded. If cars were not allowed access to all parts of cities then more people would use public transport.
All things considered, although there are many advantages to using cars in city centres, there is no excuse for people not to use public transport more often than at present. For this reason, I strongly argue that it would be better in the long run if cars were banned from city centres.

Australia's Natural Treasure
Welcome to Australia's Great Barrier Reef! The 2,000- kilometre long reef is the largest coral reef system in the world - it is so big that it can be seen from space!
Like many other coral reefs in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is in danger. The numbers of fish and other creatures that live here have fallen drastically in recent years because of pollution. We need your help to protect this unique ecosystem.
Help us protect the water
The sea around the reefs has been seriously harmed over the years, but you can help reverse this. Don't throw rubbish into the sea as it may contain chemicals that will pollute the water. Rubbish might also float to the surface, which isn't pretty for anyone to look at! Help us to keep the water
crystal clear so that it can be enjoyed by everyone.
Help us protect the coral
Remember that the reef is very much a living organism! It has been formed over thousands of years by the action of tiny creatures called coral polyps. We have to protect these creatures if the reef is to survive. If you are camping on a beach, please be careful what you do with any waste water. Washing-up liquid and bleach can be fatal to coral. If anyone offers to sell you a piece of coral, don't buy it. If you see coral for sale in a shop, tell the authorities immediately.
Help us protect the wildlife
The reef is home to 1,500 species of tropical fish, over 200 types of bird and 20 species of reptile, including the endangered Green Sea Turtle. It is also a breeding ground for humpback whales from the Antarctic. Remember - all these creatures depend on the reef for their survival. Please never fish for anything! Many species of fish are in danger of extinction and therefore protected by law. The same goes for shellfish and other creatures. They may look beautiful, but remember the reef is their home. How would you feel if someone picked you up and took you far away from your home?
Please help us to conserve Australia's natural treasure so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come!
