Unit 11. At the Library

Objectives: In this unit students will:

- learn common phrases used at the library;

- take part in role-plays to practice talking about library rules and regulation.

Task 1. Read the phrases and practice saying them:

 

Librarian: Patron:
Are you looking for a book in particular? Do you want a fiction or nonfiction book? Alright. One moment, please. We have a full database of our collection on the computer. I'll write down the call number for you. You can have the book for... (3 weeks). Every day you don't turn the book in after 3 weeks, you are charged 10 cents. Do you have a library card? I need a book about.... I think I'll browse for a little bit. Sorry, I have difficulty finding a book. How long may I have the book checked out? I'll try to get it in on time.  

 

Task 2. In pairs take part in a role-play. Follow the instructions below.

Level 1

Time 10 min.

 

A: You are an art history student. You are at the university library for the first time. Ask how you can take a book. B: You are a librarian. Explain that students can take books if they have an electronic library card.
A: Ask how long you can keep the books. B: Answer the question.
A: Ask how much the fine is if you don't return books on time. B: Answer the question.
A: Ask if you can order books online. B: Answer the question. And explain how to do it.
A: Say that you need to take a book about art management. B: Look for a suitable book in the database of the collection.
A: Take a book and thank the librarian. B: Invite the student to come more often and have a look at the new acquisitions at the library website.

 

Task 3. In pairs take part in a role-play. Read the task below.

One of you is a patron, and the other student is an archive librarian. The librarian explains to the patron the rules of working in the library archive.

 

Level 2

Time 5 min.

 

Card 1 You are a student who needs to work with a unique collection in the library archive. Ask the librarian:   · how you can get access to the collection; · about the rules of working with archive documents; · if you can photocopy a few pages; · if you can take a picture of the pages you need; · if you can buy scanned images.

 

Card 2 You are an archive librarian. Explain to the student the rules of using archive documents. Tell him/her:   · to get access to the archive he/she needs to give a copy of his/her college ID; · the student will have to sign into the archive rooms when he/she enters and sign out when he/she leaves; · the student will have to use special gloves while handling the materials. · the student can't photocopy anything; · the student is not allowed to take pictures of any pages; · the student can buy scanned images.
