Unit 1. Going by Appearances

Ex. 1a) Lead-in: Look at the pictures. How could you describe the people in them? How much can appearance say about people? What is the most important thing about our appearances?

Ex. 1b). Take a look at these three questions which look similar, but have very different meanings. Match the questions and the answers.

1. What is she like? a) 'She likes talking, reading and eating cheese.'
2. What does she look like? b) 'She is outgoing and talkative.'
3. What does she like? c) 'She is short, slim and she has big brown eyes.'

Structure for describing appearance:

1. Age (young / middle-aged / elderly / old / a baby/ toddler / teenager / in his/her 20s / 30s … / in his/her early/ late 20s / doesn’t look her/his age)

2. Heigh t (165 cm tall / of average/medium height / tall / very tall / rather tall / short)

3. Build (fat / overweight / plump /chubby / skinny /thin / slim / plump / well-built / muscular)

4. Hair/face (black / straight hair / a round / long / square face)

5. Clothes (wears a hat / earrings / is in black)

6. Distinguishing features (wears glasses / contacts / braces / has (got) a tattoo / a piercing)

E.g. Bill, who is in his early twenties, is quite tall and well-built, with thick black hair and piercing blue eyes. He is usually dressed in jeans and T-shirt and he’s got a tattoo on the right hand.

Ex. 2a) Match the sentences with the underlined phrases with the word age and their meanings.
