Step 3. Pair work. One of you is a guest the other - the receptionist at a hotel. Talk to each other

Step 4. The first step towards the solution of any problem is optimism.

Here are some problems you can have when staying at a hotel. Work in pairs and try to solve them: student A is a receptionist, student B is a guest.

1. Fan in center of ceiling does not work

2. Light bulbs burned out

3. Plumbing traps are missing on sink or shower drains

4. WIFI or internet access is only in common areas, or you need to pay

5. Staff steals when cleaning the room

6. No security box is big enough for computer or camera

7. No mosquito net is on the windows

8. Housecleaning ignores sign and clean room when sign posted to not clean

9. Remote control on television does not work

10. The room is not cleaned and the sheets are not changed

Activity 7. Couchserfing - a friend or foe?

Step1. Brainstorm (with your groupmates) what you know aboutcouchserfing.

Step 2. Read the text (Appendix) and discuss in pairs what new facts you found out about it. Use your translators or dictionaries to find out the meaning of unknown words.

Home-task. Read the phrases below and say (1) what type of travelling is meant in each of the statements, (2) what the missing words are, (3) whether the speaker likes or not this type of travelling and why.

1. Speaker 1 – ... is directly affected by any weather changes, which create wind or cause large waves. As a result, the voyage sometimes becomes dangerous.

2. Speaker 2 – ... has to be closely navigated to avoid any dangerous rock formations or ice flow, while ... has fewer such dangers.

3. Speaker 3 – ... is a solution for those with airplane fear. And it's cheaper to transport cargo with ... than byair.

4. Speaker 4 – I dislike the whole ... procedure – from the... to the check in queues and the flight itself.

5. Speaker 5 – Travelling by ... is the most fun, especially when you can get out of the ... and swim in the water!

6. Speaker 6 – I still prefer to avoid .... I was once on..., when we were ordered to turn back because someone had phoned the...to say he had placed a bomb aboard (luckily, he hadn't!).

7. Speaker 7 – It's okay to travel by .... But ... frightens me with its sharks, catastrophes. Everyone still remembers Titanic!

8. Speaker 8 – ... has to be preferable, in my opinion. At least you can walk about and enjoy the facilities and even escape anyone who annoys you.
