Chat - Real-time communication between two users via computer. Once a chat has been initiated, either user can enter text by typing on the keyboard and the entered text will appear on the other user's monitor. This is different from other text-based communications such as e-mail where it could be a couple of hours, days, or weeks to receive a response.

Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text transmission over the Internet. A LAN messenger operates in a similar way over a local area network. Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a protocol for live interactive Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfer,including file sharing. IRC is an open protocol that uses TCPand, optionally, TLS. An IRC server can connect to other IRC servers to expand the IRC network.Users access IRC networks by connecting a client to a server. Most IRC servers do not require users to register an account but a user will have to set a nickname before being connected

P-telephony - telephony over IP. IP-telephony means a set of communication protocols, technologies and techniques that provide traditional telephony dialing, redial and bilateral voice chat and video calls over the Internet or any other IP-based networks. The signal transmitted through the communication channel in digital form and are usually converted before transmission order to remove the excess information and reduce the load on the data network.
