Why is it necessary to protect the environment?

Use the clichés and the following expressions:

- the existence of the whole planet depends on it;

- to prevent the ecological catastrophe;

- to play an important role/to be of primary importance;

- to gain a widespread popularity;

- to restore the ecological balance;

- to stop the damage of the nature, the exhausting of the natural resources, the greenhouse effect, the climate change, the disappearance of species, etc.;

- to use the natural resources rationally;

- to require the co-operation of all the nations, the making of special organizations, the changing of attitude of every single person towards the environment;

- etc.

Think of all the negative factors influencing the nature and say what’s bad in them. How can we classify all of them? Make the columns in your copy-book and put them down. Discuss them with the group-mates.

6. Give the definitions (определения) to the following (следующий) phenomena and comment on them using the clichés.

Example: Overpopulation is a tendency of increase of planet population to unsustainable levels leading to shortage of resources.

Genetic engineering, ozone layer depletion,natural resource depletion,global warming,air and soil pollution,climate change.

7. Give the names to the following definitions and comment on them using the clichés.

Example: It is considered as producing of excessive amounts of garbage and waste (mainly plastic, but also out of other synthetic and non-synthetic materials). It’s a waste disposal.

- This is supposed to be the decrease of tree cover due to clearing spaces for industrial, residential and commercial purposes.

- It means the increase of human and animal diseases caused by air, water, soil pollution.

- It is a pollution of water bodies (sources of clear drinking water) with toxic pollutants.

- It is such a phenomenon of atmospheric condensation containing nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide.

- This term denotes the migration of population from urban areas to rural areas with lower density.

- This means the increase of ocean acidity caused by excessive production of CO2.

- It is a phenomenon of extinction of species and as a consequence a destruction of eco systems.

What’s needed to be done (необходимо выполнить) and what’s already done to protect the environment? Classify the expressions given below, discuss them in groups of 2-4 persons and add the examples of your own.

9. What does the term “ ecological balance ” mean (значить)? How it can be kept (to keep, kept, kept – сохранять)? Give your own understanding of it.

10. Imagine you’re a politician and you have a possibility to make the laws and amendments to them. What kind of laws and amendments (поправки к законам) to the already existing (существующий) laws (законы) would you make to protect the environment? (One person will have 2 minutes to think it over then he/she is to go to the blackboard and tell about it.) Use the conditional sentences (условные предложения), think of the clichés.
