Упражнение 1. Проанализируйте употребление модальных глаголов в следующих предложениях:

1. Nick can run long distances. 2. He can speak many foreign languages. 3. You can join our group. 4. I must excuse myself. 5. You mustn’t park the car here. 6. The boy must see a doctor. 7. You may keep my book for a week. 8. Drivers may go at 60 kilometers an hour here. 9. You may stay at your friends’ over the weekend.10. It may be cold. Take your coat. 11. Jack shouldn’t have laughed at John. 12. You needn’t buy bread. We have some at home. 13. I have to take a taxi in order not to be late. 14. We had to wait as the manager was out. 15. Robert is to take his exams next month. 16. We are to meet at 5 o’clock.

Упражнение 2. Поставьте модальные глаголы can, may, must в вопросительную и отрицательную формы и переведите предложения на русский язык:

1. I can show you an interesting picture of the city. 2. He can give you the newspaper you’re looking for. 3. His brother could play the piano very well. 4. She could translate these English texts. 5. We must attend a lecture on Finance on Tuesday. 6. You must return my magazines on Wednesday. 7. You must take your children to the country for the week-end. 8. I must go to see my grandmother on my day off. 9. You may discuss these questions after work. 10. They may take four magazines from the shelf. 11. She may sit on the sofa in my study. 12. He may leave Moscow on Saturday.

Упражнение 3. Ответьте на вопросы:

1. Can you drive (swim, play the piano, play tennis)? 2. What can you do in the evening? 3. Where can you buy bread (sugar, meat)? 4. Must you attend all lectures on Mathematics? 5. Who must we show the documents to? 6.Why mustn’t we miss the train? 7. May I use your phone? 8. What may happen to a man if he doesn’t follow the doctor’s advice? 9. Must you work so much? 10. Do you have to stay in bed when you are ill? 11. Why do you have to hurry to the station? 12. Is the train to arrive at six?

Упражнение 4. Закончите предложения. Употребите could:

Образец: I can’t sing now but I could sing very well when I was a child.

1. He can’t play tennis very well now but he … quite well when he was younger.

2. She can’t run very fast now but when she was at school she … faster than anyone else.

3. I can’t swim very far these days but ten years ago I … from one side of the lake to the other.

Упражнение 5. Закончите предложения. Употребите can’t или couldn’t и глаголы по смыслу: eat, go, see, sleep, understand:

Упражнение 6. Употребите can или be able to. В некоторых предложениях возможны оба варианта:

Образец: George has traveled a lot. He can (is able to) speak four languages.

Упражнение 7. Напишите предложения, употребляя модальный глагол may или might:

Образец: (perhaps I will go to the cinema) I may go to the cinema.

Упражнение 8. Закончите предложения. Употребите must и глаголы по смыслу: be, buy, go, help, learn, meet, phone, read, wash, win:

Упражнение 9. Употребите must или have to:

Образец: Well, it’s 10 o’clock. I must (have to) go now.

Упражнение 10. Закончите предложения. Употребите mustn’t или needn’t и глаголы по смыслу: be, buy, clean, hurry, lose, stick, take, tell, wait:

Упражнение 12. Переведите предложения на английский язык, обращая внимание на употребление модальных глаголов:

1. Мой друг умеет хорошо говорить по-французски. 2. Я не могу дать вам эту книгу. Я должен приготовить уроки. 3. Можно убрать эти цветы со стола? – Да, конечно. 4. Я знаю немецкий язык плохо, но могу переводить легкие тексты. 5. Вы хорошо играете на рояле? 6. Простите, я не могу отдать вам журнал. Я забыл его на работе. 7.Вы можете перевести это предложение? Оно очень легкое. 8. В детстве мой брат хорошо говорил по-английски. Теперь он не умеет говорить ни на одном иностранном языке. Он должен снова начать изучать английский язык. 9. Кто может ответить на мой вопрос? – Нина. Она много читает и хорошо знает литературу.10. Можно войти? 11. Можете ли вы прийти к нам вечером? 12.
