ADAM SMITH (1723 – 1790)

1. Adam Smithwas a Scottish moral philosopher and a pioneer of political economics. He was born in a small town Kirkcaldy. His father was a lawyer and a civil servant. Adam Smith attended the Burgh School of Kirkcaldy. It was one of the best secondary schools of Scotland at that period — from 1729 to 1737.While there, Smith studied Latin, mathematics, history, and writing.

2. In 1776 he published one of the most influential books of our time, The Wealth of Nations. This book earned the author the title “The Father of Economics”.

3. Smith objected to the principal economic beliefs of his days. He did not think that (что) land was the only source of wealth. This differed him from the physiocrats. He also did not measure the wealth of a nation by its money supply. This differed him from the mercantilists. In Smith’s view, a nation’s wealth was dependent (зависит) upon production, not agriculture alone. The more efficient the combination of labour and the other factors of production, the greater the output, and the greater the nation’s wealth.

4. The center of Smith’s economic philosophy was his belief in best economy function without government regulation. In these circumstances, self-interest will lead to the production of only necessary products. And business firms will produce them at the lowest possible costs. They will do this in an effort to outperform their competitors and gain the greatest profit. But all this self-interest will nevertheless benefit society because (потому что) it will provide it with more and better goods and services, at the lowest price.

5. Adam Smith died in the northern wing of Panmure House in Edinburgh on 17 July 1790 after a painful illness and was buried in the Canongate Kirkyard.
