THOMAS ROBERT MAITHUS (1766 – 1834)

1. Thomas Robert Malthus was an English scholar, influential in political economy and demography. The sixth of seven children of Daniel and Henrietta Malthus, Thomas Robert Malthus grew up in the Rookery, a country house near Westcott in Surrey. The young Malthus received his education at home in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, and then at the Dissenting Warrington Academy. He entered Jesus College, Cambridge in 1784. There he took prizes in English declamation, Latin and Greek, and graduated with honours in mathematics. In 1797, he took orders and in 1798 became an Anglican country curate at Okewood near Albury in Surrey.

2. In his Essay of the Population (1798) Maithus warned of the dire consequences of uncontrolled population growth. His argument was direct and simple. The rate of population growth is much higher than the rate of food production. Thus a large portion of humanity was doomed to a life of misery.

3. Critics of Malthusian theory argue that (что) the focus on population misses the main causes of hunger and starvation. The fact is that (дело в том, что) the agricultural nations grow enough to (для того, чтобы) feed themselves and the rest of the world. However, poor nations do not have the international currency to buy food from world suppliers.

4. Thomas Malthus is a controversial figure in his own time and even nowadays. To some he was a great prophet with relevant even now ideas. To others, his opinions are shortsighted and inappropriate today.
