BELARUS

§ 1 Belarus is my homeland. It is the place where I was born. Officially it is called the Republic of Belarus, a sovereign independent state with its own government, constitution, state emblem, flag and anthem.

§ 2 The Republic of Belarus is a small, beautiful country with the heroic past and difficult present.

§ 3 The Republic of Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe. It borders on Russia, Poland, the Ukraine, Latvia and Lithuania. Its present population is more than 10 million people.

§ 4 Belarus is a land of picturesque plains and hills, thick forests and green meadows, deep blue lakes and flowing rivers. The Dnieper, Pripyat, Berezina, Sozh, Neman are the biggest rivers with more then 500 kilometres in length. The largest lake in Belarus is Lake Naroch. The climate in the republic is moderately continental. The territory of Belarus is divided into 6 regions: Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Mogilev and Minsk. The capital of Belarus is Minsk with population about 2 millions.

§ 5 Belarus is an ancient land. Its history goes back to ancient times beginning with the Polotsk Principality in the 11 th century. From the 13th till the 16th century the territory of present-day Belarus was the part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in which Belorussian was the official language. It was one of the largest, most powerful states in Eastern Europe. As Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe many wars took place in its territory. One of the greatest wars was in 1812. A great number of Belarusians took part in this war against Napoleon. In the 20th century Belarus has lived through three revolutions and three bloody wars. The Great Patriotic war was one of the most heroic and tragic periods in the history of the country, Belarus lost more than half of its national wealth.

§ 6 Today Belarus is a country of developed industry, agriculture, science and culture. Belarusian industry produces tractors and trucks, refrigerators, TV sets. Agriculture specializes in milk and meat production, vegetables and fruit. The republic has well-developed science and education. There is the Academy of Sciences, 37 higher educational establishments and about 400 professional schools.

§ 7 As Belarus is a Slavonic country, it has certain features in common with Russia, the Ukraine and Poland. It is also unique in many respects: national character, ways of life, folklore, culture and art. Nowadays Belarusian language and culture are revived.

§ 8 Belarusian national art has deep roots in the past. During the first Russian Revolution the voices of the young poets Yanka Kupala, Yakub Kolas and other talented writers could be heard all over the country. One of the wonderful Belarusian lyric poets was Maxim Bogdanovich. He lived only 25 years but raised Belarusian literature to the world level. Byelorussians are proud of such names as Ivan Melezh ("The People of the Marshes"), Ivan Shamyakin ("The Heart in Hand"), Maxim Tank and Nil Gilevich. They are known far beyond the borders of our country. Vasyl Bykov's works have been translated into many languages of the world.

§ 9 We have plenty of artists who portray the natural beauty of Belarus, its heroic past and present. The names of Zaitsev, Krasovsky, and Savitsky are known in many countries of the world.

§ 10 Belarusian music is on the upswing. The music composed by Turankov, Aladov, Bogatyrov, and Smolsky makes up a classical fund of our national culture. The present day Belarusian composers such as Glebov, Luchenok and others work fruitfully in different musical genres.

§ 11 A number of Belarusian folk crafts have survived till the present day. The most popular among them are making pottery, wooden boxes, embroidery on linen.

§ 12 Belarus is rich in its public and religion holidays. In Belarus people widely celebrate such popular Christian holidays as Christmas and Easter. Among public holidays I must mention such holidays as New Year's Day, Woman's Day, Victory Day and Independence Day.

§ 13 One of the most important events in Belarusian culture is Kupalle - a holiday of nature with roots deep in ancient times. Many people take part in this holiday demonstrating a special repertoire of music and dance, spectacular in contemporary culture.
