Read the following sentences and translate them into Russian. Comment on the forms of the Gerund

1. Helen finds parking difficult. She always has difficulty in finding a parking place. 2. Dancing bores my husband. 3. What can you do besides keyboarding? 4. Little Angela is looking forward to being taken to Disneyland. 5. She took to ringing up her boyfriend in the small hours of the morning. 6. Are you considering buying a new car? 7. There is no denying the fact that we have made a mistake. 8. If we buy plenty of food now it will save shopping later in the week. 9. Would you mind moving your car? 10. I object to being made to pay twice for the same thing. 11. She dreads getting old. 12. Putting in a new window will involve cutting away part of the roof. 13. The tourists didn’t want to risk getting wet. 14. Grant denied having sold information to the rival firm. 15. She narrowly escaped being run over. 16. Fiona could never get used to standing in queues.

Patterns with the Gerund

Pattern 1 (Gerund as subject)

1. Swimming in the ocean is dangerous. – Плавать в океане опасно. 2. His coming so late upset our plans. – То, что он пришел так поздно, расстроило наши планы. 3. It's no use (no good) asking him for help. – У него бесполезно просить помощи. 4. There was no mistaking his voice on the telephone. – Его голос нельзя было не узнать по телефону.

13. Translate into Russian.

1. There is no crossing the river here. 2. It’s no use asking me this question. 3. There was no going back now. 4. His becoming famous cost him his privacy. 5. Easing the child into adulthood is the primary task of adolescence. 6. My answering in the affirmative gave him great satisfaction. 7. Suddenly becoming rich went to his head and he became extremely arrogant (высокомерный). 8. It's no use arguing with him. You might as well argue with a stone wall.

14. Paraphrase using the Gerund.

Model: T – I think it’s useless to argue with Tom.

St – It’s no use arguing with Tom.

1. The fact that Jane had let us down disappointed us. 2. It’s of vital importance for us to find out the truth. 3. One could not deny the fact that the company was having financial difficulties. 4. It’s useless to complain of losing your job. 5. We cannot escape the fact that working women have difficulty finding a proper balance between work and family. 6. Nobody could persuade her to change her mind. 7. It’s useless to cry over spilt milk. 8. It’s much more pleasant to lie on the beach than to sit in the office.

Pattern 2 (Gerund as predicative)

1. Deciding is acting. – Решение – в действии. 2. She didn’t feel like going out. – Ей не хотелось выходить на улицу. 3. Let’s find out who is for (against) inviting Harris to the wedding. – Давайте выясним, кто за то (против того), чтобы пригласить Гарриса на свадьбу.
