Section A. READING COMPREHENSION

Task 1. Read the text and choose the right answer to the questions.

A well known medical scientist Pasteur was born in a small provincial town in Midlands. His father was a well-recognized practical physician. His mother was the daughter of a very famous pottery producer. She died when the boy was in primary school.

Louis Pasteur got a very careful upbringing but he discouraged his father with lack of industries and bad marks. In one of his letters his father wrote him “You do nothing but hunt, fish, play silly games and disgrace yourself in the eyes of the family and friends. You’d better start doing sciences.” The younger gentleman preferred to learn history, but because his father insisted he entered the medical college at Edinburgh University. He though had soon to quit it, because it was not to his liking and started to learn law. It bored him too. Finally he got a degree in divinity at Oxford.

Upon graduation he expected to become a vicar in a rural area. But all of a sudden he got a tempting offer. The captain of one of the big cruising ships invited him to travel in the coastal waters. The captain’s hobby was religion and he was trying to interpret The Bible. He knew that Louis had got a degree in theology and thought he would be a good companion and share his views. Louise accepted the invitation.

Unfortunately, the captain and his guest had different beliefs and were differently devoted to the idea of Christianity, which caused frequent frictions between them.

Louis spent about five years on board the ship and though he found it tiresome, trying and boring, he got a good life experience forming his basic life principles. The two men had to share a cabin which was very difficult actually, because the captain often got mad and furious and they quarrelled a lot.

Their voyages were dull and gloomy. Lois knew that because of that the previous captain of the ship killed himself. (By the way, his temporary companion would do the same several years later by slitting his throat. It had happened before in his family, so no one was surprised).

After the voyage was over, The captain got married to a woman who he had been betrothed to.

In every other respect the voyage was very successful, even triumphant. Pasteur experienced many interesting collisions which he would remember all his life, gathered material for his investigation and later became very famous.

Task 2. Read the samples of texts and mark their topics:

8. The origin of an old tradition 9. Divergences in cultural habits 10. The ways of cultural interactions 11. A multicultural country life standards

A. In a free and enlightened democratic society there is nothing to separate people from each other. All classes live in continual interactions. They communicate and intermingle every day. This suggests to the people many ideas, notions and desires they would never have entertained if the distinctions of rank had been fixed. B. Concerning the differences between a typically English Sunday and a Sunday on the Continent, there are still many forms of entertainment which a visitor from Europe would be surprised to find missing on Sundays in England. It is difficult to find sporting events taking place on Sundays. Also some of the museums are closed. C. Generally the English can be proud of their achievements in the field of race relations. Of course, racial prejudice still exists. But what is striking about so many immigrants is their optimism about their adopted home. It is not merely that so few plan to return to the land they left, but so many appreciate what they have found.
D. Classical and romantic tendencies penetrated into American art in the early nineteenth century. An attempt to transfer classicism into American painting was made by John Vanderlyn who was the first American to study in France rather than in England. His first pictures shocked puritanic America. E. Pancake Day is the popular name for Shrove Tuesday, the day preceding the first day of Lent. In medieval times the day was characterized by feasting and merrymaking. Though whatever religious significance Shrove Tuesday may have possessed in older days, it certainly has none now. Neither do many other holidays.
