Some days ago you went to a concert of your favourite group. Write a letter to your friend in which:

· tell him about your tastes in music;

· describe the place where the concert took place and how you got there;

· comment on the feelings the concert inspired in you;

· say why attending live performances is more enjoyable than watching some on TV.

Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your letter that I have got recently. I am very glad that you are having holidays and you have already visited some museums in Kyiv.

As for me last Sunday I was lucky to be present at the concert of my favourite group “Okean Elzy“. Can you imagine that my dream came true and I was listening to their concert alive? You know that I am crazy about rock music. Unfortunately, my parents do not understand it and very often my mum even gets angry, when I listen to such loud music. Shame on me, but I do not like classical music. It sounds too boring for me.

I am eager to retell you about this concert. It took place in Lviv at the stadium “Arena Lviv“. There were thousands of people. My elder brother and me came to Lviv by bus, and then we got to the stadium by taxi. We arrived in time, though there were a lot of traffic jams on the road

The concert was fantastic. The singers performed 24 songs, chosen by the fans beforehand.The atmosphere was incredible! It was really cool! Everybody was singing and dancing. At the end the audience together with the musicians sang the Hymn of Ukraine. I will never forget this concert...

Honestly, I do not want to compare the concert alive with the TV versions. They are two different things. Of course, TV concert is much worse. I would recommend you to buy tickets on their concert too.

Sorry, I have to finish my letter, because my mum is waiting for me. We are going to visit our relatives.

I am looking forward to your answer.

Best wishes.

Your pen-friend wrote you a letter in which she complains that her life is too boring. Write her a letter in which:

· try to convince her that hobbies can make life more interesting;

· tell her about your active style of life.

Hi Mary,

Thanks very much for your letter that I got last month. Sorry for not answering you so long. I was really very busy. To tell the truth, it was strange for me to read about your problem. Is it possible to be bored, when you are seventeen?

There is so much to do around. The only problem is how to catch everything. First of all, you should choose something that is the most interesting for you. Hobbies can be so various and even unusual. The simplest is to collect different things from coins to autographs of celebrities. If you feel that you are capable of making something, try to knit or embroider. I am sure, soon you can boast with things made by yourself. Don’t forget about cooking. Nowadays there are many cookery programs like “Master Chef”. You can not only watch them, but also create your own recipes. In any case, please, do something but not only complain.

As for me, I have realized that life is one way traffic and it passes too quickly. That’s why we must hurry to live. Personally, I don’t have any minute to miss. On the contrary I am always lack of time. Together with my friends, I prefer active style of life. We travel a lot. I have visited many places of interest in Ukraine. As a result we started to create a channel on YouTube. At weekends we used to go to the forest for picnics. By the way, I was taught to play the guitar. It’s cool! In the next letter I’ll send you the lyrics of my new song. I hope you will like it.

To sum up, I would like to cheer you up. Don’t feel lonely, try not only to find a suitable hobby, but also look for people, with whom you have much in common. Remember, that everything depends on you! First of all you are responsible for your life, I mean how successful and interesting it can be. So don’t lose any chance to be happy.

Best wishes

Write a letter to your pen-friend in which tell her about the symptoms of your disease and how you could recover, following the recommendations of the doctors.

Dear Lilly,

I was very glad to have got a letter from you. I wanted to answer you immediately. But I felt too bad during last week. Well, I’m sorry, that you have been taken to the hospital. To tell the truth I had the same problem as you.

One day, when I came home after school I felt dizzy. I had sore throat, a running nose and I was sneezing. Then I realized that I caught a cold. It changed all my plans, because I was going to meet with my friends on the skating rink next day. I had an awful fever, so I had to take my temperature. It was above 39 degrees. My mother called for a doctor. She wrote me a prescription and she ordered me to stay in bed for some days. I also had to take medicine and of course drink hot tea with honey and lemon. Then my mom went to the pharmacy to buy some tablets and syrups. I was very lucky, because I should not take injections. Honestly, I’m afraid of them very much.

Certainly, I had to follow the recommendations of the doctor for a few days. So I can say, at the end of the week I felt much better! When I realized that I was recovering I went to the hospital to be X-rayed. When I visited the doctor, she told me that everything was OK with my lungs.

Now I’m very happy, that this nightmare has finished. Of course, I will do my best not to fall ill again. I’ll eat a lot of fruit rich in vitamins. I will start to harden my body. For that I will do my morning exercises every day. I will try not to forget a proverb: “A sound mind in a sound body”

Sorry, I have to finish my letter. Take care about yourself.

Best wishes.

Your pen-friend has just entered the university and she is going to live in a hostel. She is worried about it, because she can’t cook. Write a letter to support her.

Dear Ann,

Thanks a lot for your letter I’ve got recently. First of all, I would like to congratulate that you have become a student. At last you dream has come true. To tell the truth, I always believed in you. At the same time, I got upset, that you have some problems.

Frankly speaking, I am not very good at cooking either. As far as you know, I also live in the hostel. Luckily, my roommates can cook better than me. They taught me to cook stuffed cabbage, roasted chicken and even to bake a pie. Sometimes I cook some simple dishes myself.

You ask me about my favorite dishes. Of course, I have got those ones. Best of all I like pizza. I have never eaten better pizza than made by my mum. Italian traditional pizza with mushrooms, sausages and cheese is really tasty! I also prefer vegetable dishes, I mean different salads and soups. If you come to see me, I will treat you with the traditional dish of my family – meat dumplings. I am sure that you will be pleased with it.

Oh, by the way, as my mum is a perfect hostess, she may help both of us. I will ask her to share with the best recipes and show us how to cook some of the dishes. No doubt, she will not refuse. So in the nearest future, please, I am waiting for you.

Sorry, I have to finish my letter, because it is too late. Tomorrow I have to get up very early.

Keep and touch.

See you soon!

Your friend, Natalia

Your pen-friend wrote you a letter in which, she told you that her family had moved into a new house. Write him a letter in which:

· describe your new dwelling;

· tell her if you are satisfied with your new house.

Dear Jake,

Excuse me for not writing a long time. I haven’t written to you, because my family and I moved into a new house. Now we live in Lutsk. It is a real mess in our home. All of us are very busy, because winter is coming and we need prepare to it.

What about our moving? My father has got a new job. As far as you remember he works as a police officer. Personally, I was against this idea. I used to live in a small town. I had many friends, so it was very difficult for me to leave my native home.

Now, we have a small house surrounded by the orchard. There are many fruit trees. My mum has already planted flowers. There is a small kitchen-garden near the house. Oh, I’m so lucky that I have my own room and I don’t have to share it with my younger sisters. My family always are waiting for evening. To tell the truth, it is very pleasant not only to have breakfast or dinner but to spend spare time together too.

However, I fell very lonely, because I don’t know anybody. Honestly, I have got acquainted with an elderly woman, who lives nearby. She has even treated me with tasty pies, when I visited her. Unfortunately, I didn’t see anybody of my age in the district. I hope that I’ll meet new friends, when the holidays begin.

Sorry, I have to finish my letter. Here is my exact address: 21, President Grushevskiy prospect, Lutsk, Ukraine. I miss you, dear friend. Could you send me the phone number of our head teacher? Send my love to all classmates!

Good bye!

I’m looking forward for your answer.

Your friend, Natalya

Hi Mary,

How are you? I hope you are well. Sorry that I haven’t written for a long time. I was very busy. Guess why? Oh, my dream has come true! We have just moved into a new house. As you know, my family wanted to buy a large and spacious building. A month ago my father got a new position and all of us moved into a new two-storey house on the outskirts of the city.

Honestly, it’s huge! There is a spacious living-room, modern kitchen and even a dining-room with a large wooden table. Now all our family can be sitting around it, having tea and discussing our life. It’s unbelievable, but now I have my own room. Oh. It is beautiful! And I don’t have to share it with my younger sisters. I think it’s just fine. Now I have a lot of free space. Windows of my room overlook the garden, which is in the back yard. There are growing many fruit trees and there is children’s swing. I have been dreaming about it since my childhood.

However, not everything is great. Sometimes I become sad. I miss my former classmates, school and even teachers. Everything is new and unusual here. I got used to life in a small town. I haven’t had time to meet new neighbors. Though, in the house, which is located opposite mine, an elderly grandmother lives. She is very friendly and I’m pleased to communicate with her. She has told me that her granddaughter is of my age. The girl is soon coming back from a trip. I hope we will become good friends.

Well, I have to finish the letter because my mother is calling me to have a dinner. I also need to do my homework.

I’m looking forward to your letter,

Olia.

Think of the best holiday you have ever had. Write to your pen-friend.

· where you spent it;

· what the weather was like;

· which food you had;

· what activities you were engaged in.

Hi Ann

How are you? Thanks for your letter, that I have just received today. I am grateful for congratulation too. It’s so nice of you to remember about the date of my birthday.

Frankly speaking, it was my best birthday. Perhaps, because I celebrated it in guite unusual way. The fact that my parents bought me a package to Paris. I have never been to France before, but it has been my dream for a long time. Though I have never thought it can become true.

Luckily the weather was lovely! It was not very hot. Before my trip I read the weather forecast and got upset.

 The rainy days were promised. I even took along with me a waterproof coat and umbrella but I didn’t use then any time. The sun was shining brightly, all the days round we were walking along the streets of Paris

Of course, besides going sightseeing, we didn’t lose the chance of visiting cafes. Most of all I liked famous French cupcakes. It was heavenly tasteful dessert. But once we were served with a traditional French delicious dish- the frog legs. If I had known what it was, I would have never eaten it. But honestly it was really tasty.

Ten days of our staying in Paris passed very quickly. Every day was full of activities. Sure, we visited different museums like Luvr and Eiffel tower. My younger sister was crazy about the fantastic attractions in Disneyland. My mum went shopping and bought a lot of fashionable clothes as for me I will never forget the tour to… it was incredible! I wish you had been with me

Sorry, I have to finish my letter. It’s time for me to go to bed it’s already 12 o’clock I am going to send you photos, taken in Paris. I think it will be interesting for you

Lots of love

I kiss you

Zoryana

Dear Ann,

How are you? Thanks much for your letter and the postcard sent me from Italy. The hotel where you lived is very amazing. I’m grateful to you for the congratulations on my birthday. I’m sorry that I didn’t celebrate it at home.

I was very happy because my Godmother decided to make me an unusual present. She organized a holiday party for me in Canada. She has been living in this country for 20 years. I have never been there. So it was a great chance to visit Canada and meet my aunt and her family. Of course, my relatives paid my return ticket and all the expenses in Canada.

I was lucky the weather was beautiful. the sun was shining brightly. it wasn’t windy or rainy and the weather was warm and lovely. We could walk every day. I was surprised that my aunt didn’t forget to cook traditional Ukrainian food. My cousins like eating soup, varenyky and stuffed cabagge, but on my birthday they reserved a table in a restraint.

We were served with a salmon salad, oysters, and a chocolate cake.

Everything was very tasty!

In that restaurant there was a band. So we could dance. After the party we went to the American roller-coasters. It was really breathtaking!

Honestly I nearly died from the fear. The next day visited Niagara falls. I have never seen anything more wonderful.

I’m going to send you the photos taken by me in Canada. I hope that it will be interesting for you.

I look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Your friend Lyuda.

Hi Lenny,

How are you? I hope you are Ok! And you have already returned from Egypt.

Thank for your postcard and photos taken at the top of the pyramids. It is an amazing view. The cloudless blue sky, yellow sand ad ancient pharaons pyramids.

As for me, I have just come back from skiing resort. do you remember I am fond of snowboarding, together with my elder brother we used to spend winter holidays in the Carpathian mountains we stayed in the four star hotel in Yaremche. It took us only 5 minutes to the snowboarding hills. And it was very convenient.

We were also lucky, because the weather turned out to be sunny and frosty.

Sometimes it was snowy. On the eve I heard the weather forecast. We were promised heavy rains, and strong winds. Fortunately the meteorologists were, mistaken. So, the weather conditions were guite favourable for snowboarding.

Of course all the days we were busy sport training. We left the hotel after breakfast and came back to have supper. I am very satisfied we could eat in the café near our base. We were served with different tasty dishes and they were not very expensive. Most of all I liked the traditional dishes banosh and mandryky.

Besides snowboarding I went to the disco party and once we went to the cinema.

As I had a camera with me I took a lot of photos. I will send them to your e-mail.

On Sunday I decided to go on excursion we climbed up the highest peak Goverla. I wish you had been with me. it’s really breathtaking!

Sorry I have to finish my letter…

Best wishes

Your friend Lyuda.

You have a part time job in a student canteen. The manager wants to make this place more popular and asked you to write a report with the recommendations of your own. Write your report dwelling on the following questions:

· explain the purpose of your report;

· give examples and say why the canteen is not always popular;

· briefly describe two dishes which are not popular with young people;

· recommend your menu, entertainment, interior.

Dear Mr. Smith,

My name is Alex. I am lucky to work in your canteen. I am quite satisfied with my job, but I would like to give you some recommendations how to improve the work of your canteen. Though I am not experienced but I have already noticed why this café is not popular with the young visitors.

To my mind, the worst in the work of this canteen is its schedule. It is opened at 11 o’clock. It’s too late for students to have breakfast. And it could be closed a little later because young people prefer visiting cafes at night.

I don’t want to offend your chef, but the menu in the canteen is very poor. I have to admit that soup and noodles are not popular with young people. They can cook these dishes themselves. On the contrary I would propose to change them for something more tasty and unusual. At the same time the prices must be reasonable for students. I would also advise to make menu more diverse. It could include sushi, pizza, sweet deserts.

If you had enough funds, you might repair the hall. It seems to me that the interior could be more modern. I would paint the walls and stick a lot of posters of celebrities. Another important thing- young people like music, so at weekends, please, invite some rock groups or jazz band. I’m sure that very soon your canteen will get a great popularity in our town.

I hope that you will think over all my recommendations and make right conclusions. I believe that our staff will do the best to improve the work of our canteen. I would be very pleased, if you take into consideration my proposals.

Best wishes

Write a letter of application, covering each of the following points:

· Reasons for applying for a job

· Personal information (age, interests, language skills)

· Suitability for the job

Dear Sir/Madam,

I`m writing to you because I got interested by your advertisement in the local newspaper. You have announced the contest for the vacancy of the manager in one of your music shops. You are looking for a young, ambitious, sociable people with musical education. I think that I`m cut out for this job.

At present moment I`m a student of the university. Of course I have got a scholarship but it doesn`t cover my expenses. I have to pay for the hostel etc. Besides I have to buy clothes and food. So I need an additional source of income. Three years ago I finished the music school. I`m a bit experienced with this job because last summer I had a temporary work of the shop assistant.

In addition I have to introduce myself. I`m 18 years old, I`m very talkative, so I can easily communicate with the customers. I`d like to admit my sympathy to music. I`m keen on different styles of music like metal and classical, I could share with interesting information with visitors.

In conclusion I`d like to say that I`m very hardworking and persistent young man. So there are no reasons for you to worry that I won`t cope with my duties. But I`ll do my best to prove your expectations.

If you got interested in my proposal, please, contact with me on the phone…

Looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely yours, Anton

Your pen friend complains he has been very busy lately attending school studying for exams, taking preparating courses, going in the gym. He is upset because he is always in a hurry, but still always has a lot of things to do and too little time to do them properly. Write a letter in which:

· tell about your routine at present;

· say what your priorities are;

· give advice on your time management;

· tell your plans for the future.

Hi Ann,

Thanks very much for the letter that I have got recently. Of course, I understand how busy you are. School needs a lot of time and efforts, so I feel very tired. What about you? I guess, how you can manage to do so many things.

Though I used to get up early, I am usually short of time. As you remember I am a school-leaver, so every day we have six or seven lessons at school and much homework. I also attend preparatory courses. That’s why I have to go to bed very late. Of course it gets on my nerves. My mum has suggested me to choose the subjects that I will take exams, and study them more thoroughly. But frankly speaking, I have not decided yet what university I will prefer. Sure, I am definitely not good at Math, Physics or Chemistry. I am going to pay more attention to languages, History and Literature. I forgot about sport, although I am sure that first of all I must be healthy and fit.

Sometimes I try to analyze my routine and I have already come to conclusion that I am not well-organized. I can not manage my time in a proper way. I often waste much time, doing unnecessary things. I am not satisfied with it. So, I would like to recommend you to think over your time management.

You asked me about my plans for future. Certainly, my cherished dream is to become a student. To achieve it I must study very well. At the same time I would like to have a little rest somewhere in the mountains or in the village. I hope, that on Christmas I will be able to visit my granny.

Sorry, I have to finish my letter. Tomorrow we are writing two control tests. I believe that the next year this nightmare will finish for us.

I wish you all the best.

Your friend Olga

You attended an event last weekend to celebrate a traditional festival in your country. Write to your pen-friend, describing the event. Dwell on the following questions:

· explain the origins of the festival;

· explain what was going on;

· describe where the festival took place;

· say whether you enjoyed the event.

Hi Kate,

How are you? I hope you are well and your summer is passing unforgettable. Last weekend I had an opportunity to visit a Ukrainian folk festival. And it was exciting! I wish you had been there with me.

Well, “Trypilske Kolo“ is a festival which has been held every year since 2008 near Kyiv. This is an amazing ethnic event which gathers creative and active people from all regions of Ukraine and other countries. Each year the festival is dedicated to one of four nature elements Water, Air, Earth and Fire. It also devoted to Tripoly culture and aims to awaken the interest of society to this grain-growing civilization that existed on the Ukrainian territory long time ago.

The atmosphere was incredible! “Trypilske Kolo” combines recreational, environmental, educational, art and other programs. Besides, the area is free from alcohol tobacco and any drugs. Relaxing without doping can be possible, informative and extremely interesting for everyone.

Festival takes place on the Dnipro hills near the town called Rzhyshchiv. Landscapes here are really viewable. In my opinion, the place was chosen successfully.

To sum up, I would like to say that the festival made a great impression on me. The harmony of humans and environment was amazing!

Lots of love

Your friend Ann

You have just turned 18 and are thinking of getting a driving license. Yesterday you came across an advertisement of a Driving School located in your neighborhood. Write a letter to the school manager in which:

· give the reason for your writing;

· ask about the duration and the price of the course;

· ask about the instructors and the cars available;

· ask for a brochure with detailed information.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply at Driving School.

My full name is… I am eighteen years old and I live in Chervonohrad. Though at present moment I am studying in Lviv but I want to get a driving license here. The reason is that I was presented with a car.

First of all I would like to get some information about the duration and the price of the course. My problem is lack of time. But I hope your course will be convenient for me.

What about the instructors and cars in your school? Are there women, or only men? Personally, I prefer an experienced man-driver. I didn’t find any information in the advertisement. I suppose, have a brochure with all details. By the way, is there any school website? It would be nice.

I am going to study at this Driving School because it has an excellent reputation. If it is true, I will attend the courses with great pleasure.

You may contact with me on…

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours faithfully

A month ago you and your family moved house, so you had to go to a new school. Write a letter to your former classmate about the following points:

· what your new school is like and what you like/dislike about it;

· what the teachers are like;

· you new friends;

· the things you miss about your previous school.

Dear Peter,

How are you? Excuse me for not having written you for so long time. Sure, I remember that I have promised to write immediately after my arriving to Kyiv. But really I was very busy and didn’t have any minute of free time.

First of all I would like to tell you about my new school. It is a little bigger than ours, but less pupils study in it. It is quite modern. There is a big gym with all sport facilities, a comfortable canteen, and a good library. What is the best, that there is even a swimming pool? As it is a private school, my parents have to pay two thousand gryvnyas a month. But for this fee every pupil is supplied with all text and reference books and personal computers on the desks. It is cool! But what is bad that this school is situated far from my house and it takes me an hour and a half to get there by bus. So every morning I have to get up very early and it is very tiring for me.

Luckily the teachers turned out to be very kind and friendly. As I am a new comer, they are always ready to help me. The class-mistress is an English teacher. We have already had an interesting party dedicated to Shakespeare. I also took part in it. But I dislike our Mass teacher. She is too strict and gives us a lot of homework.

Fortunately I have already made some new friends. One of them is my classmate. We used to get to school together, because he lives in the next building. He is intelligent and easy-going. As I see, we have much in common. First of all both of us are fond of playing football. So at weekends we spend much time together.

But honestly I miss very much you, my former classmates. Please, send lots of love to all of them. Now I realize how funny and stupid we were when we quarreled. I often recollect our excursion, parties and sport competitions. If I have such a possibility, I will visit you. If you could, give my new address to our friends. I would communicate with all of them with great pleasure.

Sorry I have to finish my letter. It is already 12 o’clock. Tomorrow I will have a hard day, so I need to rest.

With best wishes your friend Sam.

Your pen-friend writes that she would like to have a dog, but her parents don’t let her have one. She complains that her parents don’t understand her. Write a letter to your friend in which advice her:

· to try and understand that having a dog is a great responsibility;

· to act so as to prove the parents that she is a responsible person;

· to talk to the parents to find out their reasons for refusal;

· to start with having a smaller pet.

Hi Ann,

How’s it going? I’ve heard that you want to get a dog. And I understand your choice because dogs are really great! I wish I had such a pet. Unfortunately, your parents’ position became a problem. It is sad when they don’t share your desires. But, I think there is a solution of any problem.

Firstly, I advise you to ensure if you cope with such a big responsibility. Having a dog is like having a baby who never really grows up. So, you’ll be obliged to forget about many things and habits.

Another important thing is to gain your parents’ confidence. After that they may change their opinion. You should behave in a proper way and show how independent you can be.

Besides, your biggest problem is parents’ negative attitude. And getting a dog will depend on it. That’s why a simple conversation wouldn’t be excessive. You should find out why they are against having a dog and try to convince them.

Oh, by the way, a few years ago I had the same misunderstanding with my mom. But we reached a compromise. We decided to start with having a smaller pet. And I didn’t regret for this decision. Because I felt how to be a pet owner and mother had less hassles.

I hope, your efforts will not be in vain. I mean, at last you will have a pet and your cherished dream will come true.

All the best.

Your friend Natalia

Imagine that you are to introduce Ukraine to a group of students from different countries. Write your speech in which:

· describe the most characteristic features of the Ukrainians;

· dwell on some customs and traditions;

· describe a Ukrainian custom you would like people from other countries to adopt;

· invite students to visit Ukraine. Give your reasons.

Dear students,

I’m very glad to participate in this international conference. I`m a representative of Ukraine, the country, which has called so much interest lately. Let me introduce my nation.

The Ukrainians are famous for their hospitality and generosity. If you happened to be invited to any Ukrainian home you would be treated with traditional Ukrainian dishes. Of course, younger generation used to celebrate different parties in the cafes or restaurants. The Ukrainians are known to be very hardworking and talented. I`m proud that Ukrainian craftsmen develop the best traditions of their ancestors. Ukrainian embroidery, pottery, wood carving, ceramics and paintings are admired all over the world.

Besides the Ukrainians are very religious. Christmas and Easter are the most favourite in Ukraine. If you had a chance to visit our country on Christmas you would probably be amazed by fascinating customs and traditions. Each family on the Christmas Eve cooks 12 meatless (lean) dishes, symbolizing 12 apostols. People attend Christmas Mass and sing carols. On Easter people come to churches where priests bless their bread, eggs, butter etc. Ukrainian hostesses try to cook paska themselves and not to buy it.

To my mind you wouldn`t stay indifferent if you were present on the Ukrainian wedding party. The bride and the bride-groom are dressed in the national costumes; the guests are served with a lot of tasty dishes. There are a lot of specific customs such as to redeem the bride, to bless the young couple, to visit bridges. I hope that they are really exciting.

In conclusion I want to invite you to come to Ukraine I`m sure that you`ll get unforgettable impressions. There are a lot of sightseeings for example lake Svityaz is a blue diamond of Volyn. The Carpathian mountains will surprise you with pristine landscapes. If you are interested in history, you ought to visit the remarkable palaces in Kamyanets Podilskiy etc. Certainly you would be delighted at the virgin beauty of the natural reserves of Askania-nova. Welcome to Ukraine.
