Story 12. Magic Man

(after M. Stanley Bubien)

Before reading the story pay attention to the information below, it might be helpful for you to understand the story better:

Jack and the Beanstalk − a fairy tale of English origin, first published anonymously in London by Benjamin Tabart in 1807 as The History of Jack and the Bean-Stalk. Although Tabart credits an "original manuscript" as his source, the tale was probably based on an oral retelling.

In Tabart's tale, Jack is a boy who sells the family cow for a few beans, much to his widowed mother's annoyance. The beans are magical and grow into a stalk that reaches the sky. Jack climbs it, discovers a strange land, and steals a giant's treasure. The giant pursues the boy, but is killed in a fall to the earth when Jack chops the beanstalk down. Tabart's tale is coloured with overt moralizing, but became the basis for all future retellings.

We believe that the information above is very interesting. Why do you think it’s called like this?
