In the main laboratory, detergent concentration for CIP circuits is controlled by a Detomat С automatic unit. This is a new system devised by Lever Industrial, and Marshfield has the first installation in the world.
The Detomat С is based on the M range, but combined with the latest microprocessor technology, is said to have greater flexibility, and increased reliability. It automatically controls 9 separate detergent application points which can all require different concentration levels of both caustic and acid cleaning solution.
Channels 1 – 6 are for the soak rinse tanks on bottle and crate washers; channels 7 and 8 are for caustic and acid pasteuriser cleaning solutions, and channel 9 controls the caustic cleaning solution for all tanks, pipelines and bottle fillers.
The VDU monitor displays, on demand:
A. Solution concentration levels on all channels, set concentration levels, high alarm set points, and channel state (high, dosing, normal, low and initial detergent in use).
B. Time delays in seconds for dosing, high and low.
C. Temperature of each detergent solution together with minimum temperature setting for dosing interlock.

The control room
The computer control room is on the first floor, with an unimpeded view of the bottling hall below. The air conditioned room with restricted access, and a built-in fire protection Halon gas flooding system houses the Alfa-Laval Alert 500
system. This controls the total operation and interfaces with the boiler, refrigeration and filling lines. The control system consists of a master process controller with decentralised input/output microprocessor terminals. The logic program is written in a high level language for both process controller and microprocessor systems. This allows it to handle dedicated tasks rapidly and reliably, and also that operators can be trained in about three weeks.
The VDU’s constantly monitor the status of all tank volumes, milk temperatures etc, printouts can be obtained and command signals transmitted. With the distributed design and use of Altop valves, the installation costs were reduced.
The Altop system consists of microcomputer-based models and decentralised units with solenoid valves on the top of each SGR product/CIP pipeline valve. There is one common signal cable and one common air supply between the model and loop of up to 64 SRC valves. At present there are 5 such loops, and spare capacity for 3 more. As each valve has its own interface, faultdetection is simplified and the system is self-diagnostic.
The control system utilizes programmed logic equipment with storage facilities for the plant specified. All process routes, CIP systems and fault alarms are handled by the control system. Items are checked whether they are operating or not; product flow cannot commence until all checks have proved satisfactory. Failures during cleaning will stop the activity, and cleaning will only be re-started once the cause of the failure has been located and cured. Sequence programs control the cleaning control system, and all CIP details are indicated on the co-ordinate panel of the operator console in the control room.
