PART I. READING

Task 1

Choose the most suitable heading for each paragraph

THE TRUTH ABOUT LYING

1. Knowing the good from the bad                  6. The worst kind?

2.  Different categories                                     7. Both sides benefit

3. A difficult distinction                                      8. How to hear lies

4.  Why we need to lie                                      9. Visual signs

5. Learnt then forbidden                                  10. Not your responsibility

A    Can you imagine a whole day without telling lies? 'Yes, of course,' most people would answer, but then they've probably forgotten all those little lies that are said so easily - 'This is delicious.', 'You look lovely in that shirt.', 'I'd love to come with you.', etc. Lying is a way of making life run more smoothly.

B    We are told not to lie from the moment we learn how to do it. According to psychologist Catherine Brown, this is at the age of about four when children realise they can deceive people. We are not born liars.

C   I n childhood, the line between imagination and lying is often not clear. Children are praised for creative imagination, but generally criticised for hiding the truth.

D    As adults we have definite ideas about which kind of lies are OK and which are not. Very often the reason for lie is the important thing in accepting or rejecting the lie.

E    Generally speaking there are three types of lies, and liars. The first sort of liar wants to please people, the second wants to protect him or herself, the third sort doesn't care about other people and lies to get what he or she wants.

F    If someone is fishing for compliments and you tell them what they want to hear, you probably think it's a 'kind' lie. However, you get something as a result of this lie - affection, friendship, peace and quiet.

G    When you lie for self-protection, the reason is clearer. To explain your lateness, you tell your boss the train was cancelled, not that you overslept. You cannot be blamed for being late, because you are not responsible for the 'behaviour' of the train and the consequences.

H    The third sort of lie could be more dangerous. It is, for example, the kind that people tell in order to climb up the ladder at work, without caring who gets hurt in the process.

I    But what about being lied to? Can you spot when someone is telling you a lie? Apparently there are some verbal clues - lots of ums and ahs - and liars take longer to answer a question. They also speak faster but don't always give the right amount of detail.

J     And then there's body language. Experts say there are certain things that can help identify someone who's not telling the truth. Speaking through their fingers and putting their hands over the face is one. Playing with their hair or clothes and being unable to stay still for any length of time is another. But the truth of the matter is that we all lie at some time, and if anyone tells you they don't, they're lying.

Task 2

Read the text and mark statements 11-17 below as T (true) or F (false).

On 2 November 1982, the British public turned on their television sets for the arrival of the nation’s fourth TV station, called Channel 4. They were greeted by the smiling face of local TV news presenter Richard Whiteley, who welcomed them with the words: ‘As the countdown to a new channel ends, a brand new countdown begins.’ And with this sentence, the words and numbers game show ‘Countdown’ was launched.

The rules of this new game show were as follows: two contestants faced each other over several rounds of games with letters and with numbers. Finally, there was the Conundrum round, where contestants had to work out the nine-letter anagram. At the end of the show, the contestant with the highest score won and was invited back the next day to face a new challenger.

However, despite the simplicity of the rules, those who watched the early editions of the 30-minute show, which was on five days a week, could hardly have imagined that it would last any longer than the original seven weeks that had been planned for it. The first contestants and guests were not exactly the most exciting people on television.

But luckily for ‘Countdown’, there were enough old people, university students and other people with nothing much to do each afternoon to keep the show alive. When the show began, Carol Vorderman won over fans with her amazing mathematical abilities. ’Countdown’ made a celebrity out of Carol, and these days she’s a familiar face on British TV. Despite her fame, Carol still loyally turned up on ‘Countdown’ each day to turn over the letters and show the contestants how to solve the numbers game until she retired in 2008.

Yes, that is correct – nearly 30 years since it began, ‘Countdown’ continues to keep its audience’s brains working every afternoon. In fact, on 3 January 2006, it celebrated its 4,000th show. Other signs of its success include the increase in the length of each programme to 45 minutes, the addition of a show on Saturdays and the number of British celebrities who have made an appearance.

11. ‘Countdown’ was the first programme ever shown on Channel 4. ……………

12. Every day two new contestants compete to become ‘Countdown’ champion. ………..

13. Originally only 35 programmes of ‘Countdown’ were planned. ……………

14. The early shows were popular with working people. ……………

15. Carol Vorderman is no longer involved with the show. ……………

16. These days ‘Countdown’ is on for four and a half hours every week. ……………

17. More and more famous people like turning up on the programme. ……………

Read the text and choose the option (A, B, C or D) you think fits best.

‘So?’ William asked over supper. ‘How was your first day?’

He looked around the table at the five of us, the first strands of spaghetti slooped into our mouths. ‘Honour?’

‘Fine.’ She kept her eyes on her plate and I saw Jake glance at the narrow line of her high shoulders up against each ear.

‘Jake?’ William bent forward, waiting to hear the worst, but Jake looked clear into his eyes and said it had been good. ‘We’re doing woodwork. And I’m making a bowl.’

‘That’s great.’

‘Yes, a pudding bowl.’ He said, dipping his chin with mirth, and he glanced meaningfully at William’s dark brown round of hair.

‘At kindergarten,’ Pandora piped up, ‘we sang lots of songs.’ And she started lisping one into her father’s ear. ‘And they played it on a ladle, a ladle, a ladle and they played it on a ladle and his name was Aikin Drum.’

‘And how about you, Lolly?’ William asked, serious, as if there might be a reason why she should need particularly to be asked, and Lolly told us all about her teacher Miss Bibeen, and how she’d been on holiday in Japan. ‘She told us about it for the whole main lesson.’ And Lolly launched into a detailed account.

I waited, sucking up spaghetti, slowing each mouthful for my turn, but William got up to fill the water jug and without seeming to see me, he began to tell us about a school play he wanted to direct.
