The Hat Lover
Nancy Parker, who lived in a little village in Essex, was 70 years old. She loved hats more than anything in the world. She thought that if she bought a new hat every spring, she would look much younger and more beautiful. Her husband always told her that she was the prettiest woman even without her fancy hats but she still liked to shop for fashionable hats and impress her husband. And even though she already had quite a collection of different hats, she still wanted to buy some more.
One spring morning she asked her friend to drive her to town to a little hat shop. The shop assistant Melinda who worked there knew Nancy very well, because she had visited this shop many times before. So, the two ladies sat down to chat and have a cup of tea. A bit later Nancy asked Melinda to show her all the fashionable hats they had. “Let me see all the hats from the upper shelf, and I want to try them all on of course!” Melinda was happy to help her good customer and said, “We have just got them! They were all made in Paris and cost a lot of money, but they are really worth buying! Every one of them!”
“Well, all I want is just one best hat you’ve got,” explained Nancy. It took her almost an hour to try all the hats on. Finally she found one and announced that she wanted the hat that she had on! It was just what she had been looking for all her life.

The sales girl smiled and explained that the hat was not for sale. “But why not?” cried the unhappy customer. “Because it is your own hat, Madam! You took it off when you came to our shop.”
