First, let me introduce myself. My name is Ekaterina Bulavina. I am a post-graduate student at the department of Geoecology, Environmental Management and Environmental Safety. My scientific advisor is Prof Svetlana Vitkovskaya.

I graduated from Vologda State University. I have a degree in Geoecology. I studied at the Department of Geoecology and Engineering Geology and I have a master’s degree in construction at the Department of Water Supply and wastewater disposal.

During the last year of study at university, I prepared a thesis on disposal of contaminated snow.

I entitled this “Development of a snow disposal scheme in the city of Vologda”. This was a very interesting topic for me, because Vologda uses outdated methods for disposing of contaminated snow - snow dumps in the city and dumping dirty snow into rivers.

My present research deals with snow cover toxicity. I chose this topic because the contaminated snow from urban areas contain a large amount of polluting chemicals.

The aim is to examine the spatial distribution and dynamics of toxicity and concentrations of pollutants in the snow. A very interesting objective which I am actively pursuing is to reveal the relationship between traffic intensity and distance to the road and the level of snow pollution.

One method that I plan to use is Land use regression - which will allow me to assess the dependence of pollution on the type of land use. An important component of my research is field observations of contamination of the snow cover.

The result of the study will be a comprehensive assessment of the impact of contaminated snow on the environment.

The practical significance of my research is that its results can develop schemes for the disposal of contaminated snow from urban areas of the Vologda region.

1. Is there much or little material published on the subject of your research?
A lot of material has been published on the subject of my research, but no such research has been done in my region.
