Местоименные прилагательные much, many, little, few

Much “много”, little “мало” определяют неисчисляемые существительные.

Many “много”, few “мало” определяют исчисляемые существительные:

Is there much light in your room? No, there isn’t. There isn’t much light in my room. There is little light in my room.

Are there many forks in the drawer? No, there aren’t. There aren’t many forks in the drawer. There are few forks in the drawer.

Little и few в сочетании с неопределенным артиклем образуют устойчивые сочетания со значением: a few “несколько”, a little “немного, несколько”:

I have a few friends here. - У меня здесь мало друзей.

I have few friends here. - У меня здесь мало друзей.

There is a little milk in the saucer. - В блюдце есть немного молока.

There is little milk in the saucer. - В блюдце мало молока.

Наряду с местоименными прилагательными much и many в значении “много” употребляются следующие сочетания: a lot of, lots of, plenty of

much - a good deal of, a great deal of

many - a great many, a good many, a large number of

There is a lot of (lots of, plenty of, a good deal of, a great deal of) sand in a desert.

There are a lot of (lots, plenty of, a great many of, a good many of, a large number of) stars in the sky.

Much и many обычно употребляются в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях. В утвердительных предложениях much и many, как правило, употребляются в тех случаях, когда они определяют подлежащее или определяются словами very, so, how, as, too:

Have you much work to do today? I have very (so, too) much work to do today.

Students have plenty of (very much, a lot of) free time in summer.

There are very many (lots of, plenty of) illustrations in this magazine.

В отрицательных предложениях с оборотом there are (is) при наличии местоименных прилагательных much и many всегда употребляется отрицательная частица not:

There is not (isn’t) much snow in the street today.

There are not (aren’t) many flowers in the fields yet.

Insert personal pronouns in the necessary case.

1. On my way home I met Peter and told... about the trip. 2. I need this book badly. I can't prepare my report without... 3. I don't know the way to the railway station. Couldn't you show it to...? 4. We are going to spend the summer in the country. Will you join...? 5. Wait for us at the bus stop.... shall be back in no time. 6. If you give me your address,... shall write to.... 7. I know this woman.... works at the factory with my mother. 8. If I see Helen, I'll ask... to ring... up tomorrow. 9. I like this radio set very much. Where did you buy...? 10. You are to be here at 7. We'll be waiting for....
